3438) Saint James The Greater, Vatican Mint: A €10 22-gm Silver Proof Coin:  The Fourth Coin in "The Twelve Apostles Coin Series": Year of Coin issue: 2023:

The Vatican released multiple coins in 2022 as part of its annual "Twelve Apostles Coin Series", which began in 2022 and will continue for six years:

Saint John Is Third Release In Vatican City’s Twelve Apostles Series.

The Vatican City coins are part of the Twelve Apostles Series, which is released annually by Vatican City. The series began in 2022 and will release two coins per year for six years

The 12 apostles were the closest followers of Jesus Christ. They were also known as the 12 disciples or just “the Twelve” and they were all influential figures in the movement that gave rise to Christianity and helped spread the gospel throughout the world.

The series, which began in 2022, features coins struck in 22 grams of highly pure 92.5% Sterling silver with extremely small mintages that will have collectors scrambling to make sure they don’t miss out.

Here one can secure the Fourth coin in the series featuring Saint James the Greater.

The Commercializzazione Filatelica e Numismatica (CFN), on behalf of the Holy See, has issued Silver Proof-quality Coins on 10.11.2022 titled “The Twelve Apostles,” depicting the disciples of Jesus Christ.

All of the Apostles (or "disciples"), with the exception of Judas Iscariot, were each made saints in the Catholic religion.

This not only recognises that these are Holy people, but it also means that Catholics can invoke these saints through prayer to intercede on their behalf.

The 12 Apostles are Simon, whom Jesus named Peter, his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the Zealot), Judas (son of James), and Judas Iscariot.

The Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Mark recount the call of the first disciples by the Sea of Galilee:

"As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men.’ At once they left their nets and followed him. "

They are spreading the Good News again through a series of silver coins released by the Treasury department of the Vatican City State.

The Fourth Coin in the Series:

This coin features Saint John embracing a diagonal cross. It was struck in 92.5% sterling silver and is 32 mm in diameter. The coin is legal tender in the European Union and Vatican City.

A Poignant And Symbolic Image Of Saint John.

The Reverse of the Ten Euro design shows an image of James the Greater depicted as a man with a long beard wearing a pilgrim’s cloak, holding a staff, and carrying a pilgrim’s pouch.

On his broad-brimmed hat is a seashell, a symbol of life and rebirth.

The Coin’s Obverse shows the Papal Crest of Pope Francis within the frame of a seashell

James was the first apostle to be martyred. His relics were taken to Galicia where they were rediscovered in 830.

Construction began there in 1075 on the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela (Campus Stellae), which would later become one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations.

In popular culture, the Cathedral is the destination at the end of the walk known as the Camino de Santiago.

When pilgrims finally reach the city after the challenging hike, they walk on their knees through the square and into the church, ending at the relics of St. James the Greater.

The design on this 22-gram silver coin shows an image of James the Greater.
