Paying Tribute To Navajo Culture And History:

The Native American Mint’s coin sets honouring different tribes continues with the 2021 Navajo Tribe Set.

The Navaho Nation:

The Navajo nation is the second most populous of all Native American peoples in the United States, with around 300,000 individuals living mostly in New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah.

Known and respected for their elaborate woven rugs and blankets, the Navajo people refer to themselves as the "Diné", (or “the People”).

The Diné creation myth tells how they emerged from the fourth world into the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado near the Mesa Verde region of the northeast New Mexico.

The semi-nomadic Navajo combined hunting and farming as a way of life. They also kept sheep and goats from which they spun and wove wool into cloth.

When weaving their iconic rugs, the Navajo always add a loose thread somewhere due of their belief that no one is perfect but God.

So, to show humility before God, they make sure there is some degree of imperfection in each piece.

Legal-Tender Native American Coins:

Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes. To honor these tribes, the Torrance, California-based Native American Mint struck a series of Indian Sovereign Nations coins that are authorized by each tribe.

The coins are also recognised by the Federal Government as legal tender in each tribal nation as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century.
