Paying Tribute To Pueblo Culture And History:
The Native American Mint’s coin sets honouring different tribes continues with the 2024 Pueblo Tribe Set.
The Pueblo Native American Tribe:
Nearly 100 years before the American Revolution, the Pueblo Indians fought another war of independence, this one against Spanish colonisers in what is today New Mexico.
The “Pueblo Revolt of 1680” resulted in a rare victory by Native Americans against European colonisers and saved Indigenous cultures from destruction under a feudal system that enslaved inhabitants of the region and forced them to convert to Christianity.
The victory, while short-lived, did stave off Spanish conquest for around 12 years - time enough for the Pueblos to secure ancient traditions, languages, and homelands that exist to this day.
The Pueblo lived in multi-story homes made of adobe and used ladders to reach second and third storey rooms.
The Pueblo were expert farmers who raised corn, beans, squash, and sunflowers, as well as cotton and tobacco.
While they were a sedentary people, they also hunted deer, antelope, and small game to augment their diet of vegetables. They were also famous for their artistry, particularly their beautiful pottery and heishi jewelry along with beautiful baskets, stone carving, and colourful rugs.
Legal-Tender Native American Coins:
Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes.
To honour these tribes, the Torrance, California-based Native American Mint struck a series of Indian Sovereign Nations coins that are authorised by each tribe.
The coins are also recognised by the Federal Government as legal tender in each tribal nation as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century.
