Celebrating The Cherokee Sovereign Nation

Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes.

To honour these tribes, the Torrance, California-based Native American Mint struck a series of Indian Sovereign Nations coins that are authorised by each tribe.

The coins are also recognsied by the Federal Government as legal tender in each tribal nation as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century.

The Largest Native American Tribe In The United States - The Cherokee Nation:

The Cherokee nation is the largest Native American tribe in the United States. They lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee when settlers arrived from Europe.

The name Cherokee means “Speakers of another language” and the Cherokee called themselves the Ani-Yunwiya", (meaning “principal people)”.

They fought "with the French during the French and Indian war" and sided with the British during the American Revolution.

The Cherokee lost much of their land following these conflicts

They were ultimately forced from what little land they had left in 1838 and relocated to the state of Oklahoma on a march that has since been referred to as “The Trail of Tears” during which 4,000 Cherokee people died during the tortuous journey.
