Netherlands capital city is celebrating!
From October 27th, 2024 to 27th of October 2025, Amsterdam is celebrating its birthday.
And that is starting huge, with the launch of a commemorative coin.
Only two times a year, the Royal Dutch Mint launches a commemorative coin, commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Finance.
The 750 years Amsterdam 5 Euro Coin in UNC Quality is a coin that was minted in the uncirculated quality.
This means that they are struck for circulation, but not used in circulation.
750 years Amsterdam: from quiet town to vibrant metropolis:
It has a population of 921,402 within the city proper, 1,457,018 in the urban area and 2,480,394 in the metropolitan area.
Located in the Dutch province of North Holland, Amsterdam is colloquially referred to as the "Venice of the North", for its large number of canals, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Amsterdam was founded at the mouth of the Amstel River, which was dammed to control flooding.
Originally a small fishing village in the 12th century, Amsterdam became a major world port during the “Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century”, when the Netherlands was an economic powerhouse. Amsterdam was the leading centre for finance and trade, as well as a hub of secular art production.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded and new neighbourhoods and suburbs were built. The city has a long tradition of openness, liberalism, and tolerance.
Cycling is key to the city's modern character, and there are numerous biking paths and lanes spread throughout.

The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, founded in 1602, is considered the oldest "modern" securities market stock exchange in the world.
As the commercial capital of the Netherlands and one of the top financial centres in Europe, Amsterdam is considered an “alpha world city”.
The city is the cultural capital of the Netherlands.
Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters in the city.
Many of the world's largest companies are based here or have established their European headquarters in the city, such as technology companies Uber, Netflix, and Tesla.
In 2022, Amsterdam was ranked the ninth-best city to live in by the Economist Intelligence Unit and 12th on quality of living for environment and infrastructure by Mercer.
The city was ranked 4th place globally as a top tech hub in 2019.
The Port of Amsterdam is the fifth largest in Europe.
The KLM hub and Amsterdam's main airport, Schiphol, is the busiest airport in the Netherlands, third in Europe, and 11th in the world.
The Dutch capital is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, with about 180 nationalities represented.
Amsterdam's notable residents throughout its history include painters Rembrandt and Vincent van Gogh, 17th-century philosophers Baruch Spinoza, John Locke, René Descartes, and the Holocaust victim and diarist Anne Frank.

The first time we encounter the name Amsterdam, in the form of Amestelledamme, is on October 27th 1275.
It was a small village that was located at the banks of the Amstel, but it had a very favourable position for trade.
In 1275, Amsterdam officially received the toll privilege: this is seen as the birth date of the city.
From 1300, when Amsterdam officially gets their city rights, the city really starts to grow.
The occupation of Antwerp by the Spaniards in the 16th century and the industrialisation are two major reasons Amsterdam had the opportunity to grow into the metropolis that it is today.
The jubilee year Amsterdam 750 is celebrated big in both 2024 and 2025, as we countdown to the big birthday on October 27th 2025.
There are many events and initiatives planned in and around Amsterdam.
Past, present and connection are three of the most important pillars of the city’s anniversary.
With the commemorative coin, The Dutch emphasise these pillars as they commemorate 750 years Amsterdam.
Design of the coin:
The 750 year Amsterdam 5 Euro Coin UNC Quality is designed by Hans Gremmen. The collaboration between past and present if very well visible, both on the obverse and reverse of the coin.
The Reverse of the 5 Euro coin consists of two parts.
One half of the coin has the image of an old pliers from 1350 with the Amsterdam Coat of Arms on it.
This is said to be the very first time that the city Coat of Arms was being used.
This half of the coin also has a more matte finish.
The other half of the coin contains modern typography, which has been used to write the text "750 jaar Amsterdam" ("750 Years of Amsterdam") and the years "1275 – 2025".
This half of the coin has a more shiny finish.
Both parts come together by using the three crosses from the Amsterdam Coat of Arms in the middle of the reverse.
The specifications of this Coin are:
Country of issue: Netherlands; Metal Composition: Silver plated copper; Weight: 10.5 grams; Diameter/Size: 29.00 mm; Nominal value: 5 Euro; Mint: Royal Dutch Mint (RDM); Mintage: 50,000 pieces.
- The coin is placed in a coincard that has the iconic Royal Palace Amsterdam on the Obverse.
- The coincards in BU Quality, UNC Quality and the First Day Issue* each have the image of an iconic building in Amsterdam.
- Bring the icons together and collect the Royal Palace Amsterdam, the Basilica of Saint Nicholas and Amsterdam Central Station.
The Reverse contains a part of the official Amsterdam 750 banner.
- The First Day Issue of the 750 years Amsterdam 5 Euro Coin is only available on October 27th from 09.00 am to 11.59 p.m.
- Last commemorative coin of 2024.
- Delivery from 28th of October 2024.
