3407) "Bluenose" sails onto Canada's fifth Tribute Coin minted by the Winnepeg Mint (W Mint Mark) coin: Fifth coin in the Coin SeriesDate/Year of Coin issue: 2024:

Honouring history:

The Header/Banner showcases the Obverse and Reverse of the 10 Cents Coin

These circulation coin designs are part of Canada’s history and its heritage:

“W” Mint Mark: Coin 5 in a six-part series of 1 oz. 99.99% pure silver coins – a rarity for the Winnipeg Mint, which typically focusses its efforts on circulation coins rather than numismatic ones, and that’s why the “W” mint mark is so unique.

The series continues in 2024. The series that kicked off in 2023 is set to wrap up in 2025, with one more coin to come:

Coin 1: Polar Bear

Coin 2: Loon

Coin 3: Coat of Arms

Coin 4: Caribou

Coin 5: Bluenose

Coin 6: Beaver

Out of Canada’s six classic circulation coin designs, Emanuel Hahn’s concept for the 10cent piece easily stands out - it is the only one that doesnt feature an animal (not even a heraldic one).

Hahn’s popular depiction of Bluenose is recreated here in 99.99% pure silver, with a tailored specimen finish that brings renewed appreciation for a Canadian icon whose spirit still sails on.

The stirring design of "Bluenose", the legendary racing and fishing schooner from Nova Scotia, speaks to the magnitude of the fishing industry and Canadas rich maritime heritage.

This is the first pure silver numismatic series struck at our Winnipeg facility.

The Coin:

The Reverse of the 10 Cents Coin features the Bluenose schooner.

The Obverse of the 10 Cents Coin features an effigy of King Charles III facing left.

The peripheral inscriptions are - "CHARLES III. D.G. REX".

DID YOU KNOW?

 - Similar to how Emanuel Hahn’s caribou design was originally intended for a different denomination than the one it’s associated with today, the “fishing schooner under sail” concept was initially considered for the 25 cents before being chosen for the 10-cent coin.

- A numismatic tribute to Canada’s 10-cent circulation piece, this all-silver coin’s reverse features Emanuel Hahn’s depiction of the iconic Bluenose fishing schooner under sail, along with the “W” (Winnipeg) mint mark denoting where this coin was struck.

The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

 - Struck in Winnipeg: The Bluenose dime:

Canada’s smallest circulation coin – smaller even than the now-retired cent or penny – hasn’t featured many alternate designs since Bluenose first appeared on its reverse in 1937.

But all of Canada’s 10-cent circulation coins have been struck at the Winnipeg facility since 1976, including 1992’s double-dated 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation 10-cent coin, 2001’s Year of the Volunteer, 2017’s 150th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation, and the first-ever coloured 10-cent circulation coin in 2021.

- ‘Bluenose’ is an official mark adopted and used by the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage pursuant to the Trademarks Act (Canada).

It is used by the Royal Canadian Mint with the Department’s permission.

 - The six Tribute: W Mint Mark coins are available for individual purchase, or with a series subscription that guarantees a complete set plus a free wooden display case.
