About the Grizzly Bear:

The Grizzly Bear ("Ursus arctos horribilis"), also known as the "North American brown bear" (or "Grizzly"), is a population or subspecies of the brown bear inhabiting North America.

Meaning of "Grizzly":

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark (of the Lewis and Clarke expedition first described it as "Grisley", which could be interpreted as either "Grizzly" (i.e., "Grizzled"—that is, with grey-tipped hair) or "Grisly" ("fear-inspiring" or "gruesome").

(The Lewis and Clark Expedition, also known as the "Corps of Discovery Expedition", was the United States expedition to map and make friends with the Native Americans in the newly acquired western portion of the country after the Louisiana Purchase)

In addition to the Mainland Grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis), other morphological forms of brown bear in North America are sometimes identified as grizzly bears.

These include three living populations—the Kodiak Bear (U. a. middendorffi), the Kamchatka bear (U. a. beringianus), and the Peninsular Grizzly (U. a. gyas)as well as the extinct California grizzly (U. a. californicus), Mexican Grizzly (U. a. nelsoni), and Ungava-Labrador Grizzly (U. a. ungavaesis).

On average, grizzly bears near the coast tend to be larger while inland grizzlies tend to be smaller.

Grizzly bears have one of the lowest reproduction rates of all land mammals in Canada.

A sow (mother) will have her first cubs when she’s five-to-eight-years old, and it might be another four or five years until her next cub (the average lifespan for a Grizzly Bear in the wild is 20 to 25 years).

While Grizzly Bears are omnivores, personal diets vary from bear to bear, depending on their environment and available resources.

During their time together, a mother will typically teach her cubs to dig up roots and search for carrion in spring, feast on berries and grasses in summer, and spawning salmon later in the season and go grubbing for insects and larvae in fall.

All Canadian Grizzlies hibernate, so they need to pack on as much fat as possible in late summer and early fall.

The Coin:

The Reverse of the $30 (Thirty Dollars - CAN) Coin features a rare and scenic view of a Grizzly Bear (Ursos arctos horribilis) mother and her two cubs enjoying a quiet moment in the wilds of western Canada.

Set in a traditionally engraved landscape, the wildlife portrait is enhanced with multifaceted engraving that gives the grizzly bears a more three-dimensional form.

Female Grizzlies - "Mama Bears" - are known to be fiercely protective of their cubs and will aggressively defend them at all costs.

But in the absence of perceived threats, a sow reveals her softer side, nurturing her young through their first three years of life and imparting the life lessons needed to ensure their survival.

A mix of geometric shapes in a realistic landscape makes for an interesting/compelling design that leaves a lasting impression.

The Obverse of the 2023 Grizzly Bear Silver $30 Coin depicts an effigy of Late Queen Elizabeth II facing right designed by Susanna Blunt. The Obverse features a polygon pattern in the background. An array of laser-engraved polygon shapes—a nod to the multifaceted elements on the Reverse—form a dynamic pattern behind the effigy.

This face also bears a special marking at centre left that includes four pearls symbolising the four effigies that have featured on Canadian Coins at various points of time, and the double date of her reign.
