The Description further reads:
"Harking back to the Penny Black, a light image anainst a dark background, Arnold Machin deliberately atrove for classic smplicity in his design. Yet the final result was deceptive. A lot of work had gone into eliminating elaboration and unnecessary wording and decoration."
"The Penny Black began with a medal of Queen Victoria by William Wyon.
Machin began in 1965 with a head of the Queen for the forthcoming decimal coinage. This was based on a series of photographs by Snowdon. After he was chosen to create the new stamp design in early 1966, Machin worked from a photograph of his coin mould.
From this he sculpted a first plaster cast and this image was incorporated into designs featuring various regional symbols. A number of essays, or trial stamps, were printed but these were rather fussy and detailed.
Over a period of approximately six months, Machin simplified the head and eliminated both frame and wording. Further essays were printed showing only the Queen's head and value against a solid background. Here the Queen is still wearing a tiara, but the Stamp Advisory Committee preferred the diadem featured on other essays by David Gentleman from photographic portraits by John Hedgecoe. Queen Victoria had also worn this same diadem on the Penny Black.
From this Machin created a new sculpted plaster cast. When the Queen saw the new essays she expressed a preference for a corsage. This Machin added in pen and ink on photographs and then translated into a new sculpture. The final design was achieved in one year."
"Over the decades, changes in features such as colour, printer, paper and gum have produced many new stamps and varieties that are much sought after by collectors.
- In autumn 2008, Arnold Machin's iconic profile of the Queen first appeared on a new type of printer-on-demand stamp.
- Since February 2009, security features have been progressively introduced into the range of Machin definitives, including oval security slits to inhibit removal froes and an irridescent overpring of the words "ROYAL MAIL" on all but the lower-priced make-up values. At the same time the conversion to self-sdhesive for all Machin stamps took place.
- The year 2013 saw a significant new chapter for the Machin definitives with the introduction of a revised "Jubilee" colour palette for some values, including "Royal Mail Red" for 1st class. All stamps are now printed with an iridescent overprint. The introduction of unique barcodes on stamps, which also occasioned a new colour palette, began in 2021.
This Stamp Pack is numbered 116.The stamps feature the bas-relief portrait by Arnold Machin OBE, RA with typography by Jeffery Matthews MBE, FCSD, FRSA.
Stamp Design is by Royal Mail Ltd. 2022 based on an original design by Sedley Place, with words by Douglas Muir and Royal Mail.
