2923) Raj Bhavan, (Lucknow) Uttar Pradesh, India: 225th Year Anniversary (1798-2023): India Post has issued a postage stamp of 500 Paise (or Rs.5/-) commemorating the grand building built by Major General Claude Martin: Date of Stamp issue: 20.06.2023:

Raj Bhavan Uttar Pradesh is a historic, magnificent building situated in the heart of Lucknow and is the official residence of the Governor of Uttar Pradesh.

This grand building, surrounded by lush green gardens and beautiful landscapes was built in 1798 by the French architect Major General Claude Martin.

The Raj Bhavan has nostalgic memories for me. We used to participate in the Flower shows at the National Botanical Gardens (NBRI) and the Governor's House and walked away with several prizes in cut flower exhibits, prize winning fruits etc, including Champion of the Show. I used to give every one of our exhibits an abstract/exotic names, which used to be carried in the local newspapers which the reporting journalists would try and interpret the "meaning" thereof in their own way.

A brief about Major General Claude Martin's coming to Lucknow as an emissary of the East India Company to negotiate with Nawab Asaf-ud-daula:

In 1751, as a young man, who was born in Lyon, France, Claude Martin decided to seek his fortune abroad and signed up with the French Compagnie de Indies. He was only 16 years of age.

He started his military career as a dragoon (a member of a cavalry regiment) and also served under Governor General of French India Joseph Dupleix.

At this time, the East India Company was interested in expanding the river trade into the territories of the Nawab of Awadh.

Major General Claude Martin (now an officer in the East India Company) was sent to negotiate a deal with Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula who was 13 years younger to him. He immediately became a trusted confidante of Asaf-ud-Daula, who saw in him a person, essential to off-set the East India Company's influence.

In 1776, Martin was allowed to accept the appointment of Superintendent of the Arsenal for the Nawab of Awadh Asaf-ud-Daula at Lucknow, while retaining his rank with the East India Company.

He became a great architect for Asaf-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh and together they designed many of Lucknow’s historical buildings

He was also the founder of two Colleges in Lucknow, two in Kolkata and three in Lyon France, his original hometown.

The Raj Bhawan was originally called "Kothi Hayat Baksh" (or "Abode of the Gift of Life"):

It was the residence of the British Governors of the United Provinces and later served as the residence of the Governor of Uttar Pradesh after India's Independence in 1947.

Raj Bhavan, Uttar Pradesh is a double storey building with high verandahs, lofty ceilings and abundant greenery.

The main building has large porticos, meeting halls and housing facilities for guests.

Gandhi "Sabhagaar" has beautiful flower decorations on the side walls and ceiling with gold coloured traditional paintings.

It also houses a selective collection of sculptures and monuments of great legends in the "Kala Kaksh" ("Art Chamber").

the Raj Bhavan is a unique building having Indo-European architecture that reflects the rch cultural history of the State. The construction of the building is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the architect and artisans who built it.

It is also known for its iconic features such as its grand walls adorned with beautiful carvings and integrated designs.

It has a sprawling campus of 52 acres that adds to its beauty and charm. Colourful gardens, cool fountains, beautiful trees, "Panchtantra" ("Fitness area for children") and chirping birds also enhance its beauty.

The Raj Bhavan has silently witnessed 225 years of history of Awadh. This great building faced many ups and downs and played a very significant role in the Indian Freedom Struggle by providing a platform for political dialogue and protest against the British Raj.

Many important political and administrative decisions have been taken in this building over the years.

In the celebration year of "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav" this Commemorative Stamp has been issued to celebrate the 225th Anniversary of this grand historic building.

    1. Thanks, Vikram. The Raj Bhavan was the last building that Martin constructed in Lucknow and was one of his finest.
