2023 marks the 150ᵗʰ Anniversary (1873-2023) of Prince Edward Island’s entry into Confederation, and this coin commemorates the occasion through its engraved collage of classic P.E.I. sights and symbols.
From the Confederation Bridge that connects the island to the mainland, to the iconic lighthouse that bridges the past and present, this Coin is an inspirational ode to Canada’s smallest province.
About Prince Edward Island:
The crescent-shaped Prince Edward Island (PEI) is the smallest Canadian Province.
Its area of 5,520 sq km (2,184 sq. mi) makes it even smaller than some of Canada's National parks, but also allows it to be explored in less than a week.
The island lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, separated from the Northern coasts of the Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia by the narrow Northumberland Strait.
The Mi'kmaq people, original inhabitants of PEI called the island "Abegweit" (meaning "Land Cradled on the Waves". They believed that it was formed by the Great Spirit throwing some red clay into the sea.
In 1534, the French explorer Jacques Cartier laid claim to the island but by the end of the 18th Century, the British managed to get control of the island. The British expelled the Acadians and named the island after Queen Victoria's father Prince Edward.
The islanders maintained a sense of independence until the Charlottetown Conference of 1864, when Canada was born, earning PEI the epithet "Cradle of the Confederation".
PEI is a well-known haven of peace and tranquility. The nature here has a serene quality, with expansive undulating hills where rich green and ruddy farmland offer an eye-catching patchwork of colour. Dotting this landscape are little hamlets, where the tempo has remained unchanged by the passage of time.
Like their Mi'kmaq predecessors many of today's islanders draw their livelihood from agriculture and fishing. The island boasts of beautiful lighthouses, tree-lined streets and 19th century terraces, as wellas, coves, parks, rocky headlands and long sandy beaches.
The Commemorative Coin:
The Reverse of the $20 (Twenty Dollars) Commemorative Coin features an inspirational mix of images that are synonymous with the province, both in the eyes of residents and visitors - from official provincial emblems to familiar landmarks that are part of the P.E.I. experience.
From the Heritage Lighthouse to the Confederation Bridge, the collage represents more than 150 years of history.
The first lighthouse in Prince Edward Island, the Point Prim Lighthouse, appears in the foreground - it sits atop the shield from the Arms of Prince Edward Island, which is flanked by another official provincial emblem, the Lady’s Slipper (Cypripedium acaule) flower.
Built in 1845, the Point Prim Lighthouse predates Canadian Confederation (1867).
It takes about 10 minutes to drive across the Confederation Bridge, the longest in the world crossing ice-covered waters. Construction began in 1993 and the bridge opened on 31.05.1997.
Behind the lighthouse and beneath the view of the Confederation Bridge, a map outline of the island shows the Confederation Trail.
The inscriptions are - "20 DOLLARS" (on the upper periphery) and "150 Years ANS" (on the centre right of the lighthouse).
The Obverse of the $20 (Twenty Dollars) Commemorative Coin features the effigy of Late Queen Elizabeth II designed by Susanna Blunt.
It also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolising the four effigies that have featured on Canadian coins during her lifetime and the double date of her reign (1952-2022).
