The Royal Canadian Mint has brought out a Silver Proof Coin, which features an original design showcasing the artwork of renowned wildlife artist Robert Bateman.
One of Canada’s most recognised artists, Robert Bateman is an unflagging proponent of wildlife conservation and education. His photo-realistic art reflects his deep love of nature and his commitment to its preservation.
The artist has long been an advocate of wildlife education and learning initiatives that deepen one’s connection with nature, such as those carried out by the Bateman Foundation.
Based in Victoria, B.C., the Foundation oversees the Bateman Gallery, home to the largest permanent collection of original works by Robert Bateman. The Batemans have also donated millions of dollars’ worth of artwork and limited-edition prints throughout the years to help fund conservation efforts across Canada.
Robert Bateman's realistic and evocative painting style reflects his deep understanding and appreciation for nature, featuring wildlife in its natural habitat and encouraging the viewer to closely observe the natural world.
He is a spokesman for many environmental and preservation issues, using his art to raise millions of dollars for these causes.
The majority of Bateman's paintings are in acrylic on various media and have been shown in major solo exhibitions around the world.
He has been the subject of several films and books including "The Art of Robert Bateman" (1981), "The World of Robert Bateman" (1985), "An Artist in Nature" (1990), "Natural Worlds" (1996), "Thinking Like a Mountain" (2000), "Birds" (2002), "New Works", (2010), "Life Sketches" (2015), "Bateman’s Canada" (2017) as well as several children's books.
The Coin:
This coin is the latest in a growing list of famous Bateman originals that have been re-created on Canadian Coins, including 2019’s "Into the Light – Lion", 2020’s "Summertime Polar Bear", 2021’s "Wolf Sketch" and 2022’s "Snowy Owl on Driftwood".
About the "Bald Eagle":
A symbol of strength and resilience in the wild, the bald eagle is a regal sight to behold and is especially held in great reverence by Native American peoples who believe the eagle’s spirit is both sacred and supernatural.
The eagle is especially poignant in all three North American countries - Canada, the United States, and Mexico and it is a protected species in all of these countries.
Eagles also feature prominently in the United States and Mexico as national heraldic symbols.
Robert Bateman - on his painting - "Vantage Point - An Eagle Portrait - The Bald Eagle":
"Like a massive shadow, the eagle sweeps along the coast. Finding a vantage point, he lands. Facing into the wind from the sea, he adjusts his wings.
Once the king of the sky across the continent, the bald eagle has been forced to retreat because of the pesticides and development pressures, but in coastal areas as far apart as Florida and Alaska, he is not only surviving, but thriving.
He is noted as a bold or clever hunter or fisherman, and so the edge of the sea provides easy fare for his diet.
In this painting I wanted to emphasize the thrust into the wind of the bird, the uprooted tree, and the rocky spit. These elements project into space toward an endless horizon. In contrast is the rich tangle of mosses and other plants which have colonized the stump. I was almost suggesting a Japanese bonsai garden with a little hemlock tree dwarfed by the elements."
The Obverse and Reverse of the $30 (Thirty Dollars - CAN) Silver Coin seen placed together.
The Reverse of the $30 Silver Proof Coin presents a beautifully engraved version of Bateman's work titled "Vantage Point - Bald Eagle".
It features a side view of a "Bald Eagle", (or "Haliaeetus leucocephalus"), perched on the moss-covered roots of an uprooted tree.
The coin’s luminous silver surface stands in for the original painting’s misty grey sky, where the text "CANADA 2023" appears on the upper periphery, while the artist’s signature is engraved beneath the coin’s denomination of "30 DOLLARS".
The Obverse of the $30 Silver Proof Coin features a nature-themed etched background pattern and the memorial effigy of the Late Queen Elizabeth II.
The design bears a special marking that includes "four pearls" (symbolising the four effigies of Queen Elizabeth II) that have been presented on Canadian coins over time and are positioned between the years of her reign - "1952 and 2022".
