About National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD):
"National Aboriginal Day" (NAD) or "National Indigenous Peoples Day" (NIPD) is a day recognising and celebrating the cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Indigenous peoples of Canada.
The day was first celebrated in 1996, after it was proclaimed that year that it was to be celebrated annually on 21 June.
This date was chosen as the statutory holiday for many reasons, including its cultural significance as the Summer solstice, and the fact that it is a day on which many Indigenous peoples and communities traditionally celebrate their heritage.
This day has been celebrated as a statutory territorial holiday in the Northwest Territories since 2001 and in Yukon since 2017.
It is not however, currently considered a statutory holiday across the rest of the country.
Historical brief:
For generations, many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on June 21 or around that time of year because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.
The day came about after a series of calls for such a celebration.
It was first self-declared Indian Day in 1945, by the chiefs from across Turtle Island (North America).
In 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood (now the Assembly of First Nations) called for the creation of a National Aboriginal Solidarity Day to be celebrated on 21 June.
Slightly more than a decade later in 1995, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended that a National First Peoples Day be designated.
Also in that same year, a national conference of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people chaired by Elijah Harper, titled The Sacred Assembly, called for a national holiday to celebrate the contributions of Aboriginal peoples to Canada. 21 June often coincides with the summer solstice.
National Indigenous Peoples Day is now the first of a series of Celebrate Canada days, followed by the National Holiday of Quebec on 24 June, Canadian Multiculturalism Day on 27 June, and concluding with Canada Day on 1 July.
In 2001, the 14th Legislative Assembly passed the National Aboriginal Day Act making the Northwest Territories the first jurisdiction in Canada to recognise this day as a formal statutory holiday.
On 21.06.2017, the event was renamed as the event National Indigenous Peoples Day.
In recent years, the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network has broadcast an annual cultural gala, Indigenous Day Live, on National Indigenous Peoples Day.

This Coin celebrates the diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada, and is an open-ended invitation to learn more about and honour First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples and their histories and heritages.
NIPD takes place during the summer solstice, the day of the year that Grandfather Sun provides us with the longest light. It symbolises a new season of life, a chance to start fresh and leave past burdens behind.
The Indigenous people celebrate the cultural identity on Indigenous day under the Midnight Sun, treasure their memories through seasonal changes and challenges. Their cultural experiences have inspired this art.
The Métis symbols used on this coin are images that the Métis, have come to identify with and these are unique to our distinct culture. The sash, the wheel of a Red River cart, the Infinite flag and the five-petalled flower or Wild Rose.
The Obverse of the 2023 National Indigenous Peoples Day Commemorative Silver $2 circulation coin depicts an effigy of Late Queen Elizabeth II facing right designed by Susanna Blunt.
The obverse also bears a special marking at centre left that includes four pearls symbolising the four effigies that have featured on Canadian Coins at various points of time, and the double date of her reign.
