Did You Know Series (34): World Stamp Show NY 2016, being held at Javits Centre, New York from 28.05.2016 to 04.06.2016:

World Stamp Show NY 2016, the once-a-decade event is being held at the Javits Center in New York City from 28.05.2016 to 04.06.2016.

This stamp show is one of the largest stamp shows in the world. Interestingly, this is the first time that an International Stamp show is being held in New York after seven decades. The last such Show was the “Fifth International Philatelic Exhibition held at New York Coliseum (FIFEX) held from 28.04.1956 to 06.05.1956.

The Show has been designated as a “World Stamp Exhibition” by the “Federation Internationale de Philatelie” (FIP) and has been labelled as one of “Olympic proportions” with hundreds of volunteers, Clubs and Organisations working incessantly to make the Event a phenomenal success.

This Show is a continuation of a series of Philatelic exhibitions which have been held in the United States once every ten years since the beginning of the 20th Century.

About the Federation Internationale de Philatelie (FIP):

The Federation Internationale de Philatelie (FIP) was founded on 18.06.1926 and is the World Federation for Philately, based in Zurich, Switzerland.

The primary objectives of the FIP are:

-  to promote stamp collecting and philately

-  to maintain friendly relations and friendship among all people

-  to establish and maintain close relations with the philatelic trade and postal administrations

- to promote philatelic exhibitions by granting Patronage and auspices.

Since 1926, the FIP has promoted Philately and Stamp collecting and co-ordinates contact between the Philatelic Organisations in different countries.

FIP has 11 Commissions headed by its own Commissioner: Aero-philately, Astro-philately, Fight against Forgeries, Maximaphily, Philatelic Literature, Postal History, Postal Stationery, Thematic Philately, Traditional Philately, Revenues and Youth Philately. Every year FIP patronises several Stamp exhibitions and once in ten years, a “World Stamp show”.

The Participation:

Around 250,000 to 300,000 visitors are expected to visit the event which features more than 200 dealers, stamp collectors, exhibitors and postal administrations and societies from over 70 countries around the World, selling and buying philatelic material of all kinds.

4,146 Frames of Competitive Exhibits, a Court of Honour and Invited Exhibits displaying priceless stamp rarities, 355+ hours of Seminars/Meetings, Youth and Beginner Activities and First Day Ceremonies sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service USPS), U.N. Postal Administration (UNPA) and other Nations.

Several reputed Auction houses are also participating in the event and it will be interesting to see which stamps/collections bring the highest bids.

The Award Ceremonies:

Three Award Ceremonies will be conducted to recognise both Philatelic and Literature Exhibitors. The Award Ceremonies will be conducted on 02.06.2016 as under:

At 11.00 AM – Bronze, Silver Bronze, Silver and Large Silver Medal winners will be awarded.

At 1.00 PM – Vermeil and large Vermeil winners will be awarded.

At 3.00 PM – Gold and Large gold Winners will be awarded.

The Exhibition’s top three Awards – the Grand Prix National, Grand Prix Internationale and Grand Prix d’Honneur will be the only Awards presented at the evening’s Palmares dinner. The Palmares Dinner will be a fun celebration of Friendship with Dancing and Entertainment featuring the Grand Prix Awards Presentations.

The competitive entries will be judged by an International Jury constituted by eminent experts from over 45 countries.

Several Individual Indian Philatelists have showcased their Exhibits/Frames in competitive categories, some of them being

Soruth (Indian Feudatory State), Postal History of Cochin, Fiscals of Cochin, Jodhpur, Indian State of Kishangarh, Olympic Games, A study of the first issues of India (1852-1854), Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Issues of 1948, Stamps of Sikhs – A Thematic Tribute, The History of Olympic Games through Philately, Indian Antarctic Expedition – A Philatelist’s Guide, Collector’s Guide to British India Bazaar Post cards – Edwardian and Georgian Period, India 1929 Airmail Stamps : A study of Constant Varieties, Collector’s Guide to First Day Covers & Folders of India with Set of stamps, Se-tenant Stamps & Miniature sheets.

A Sample of the Exhibits in the Court of Honour and Invited Exhibits:

The exhibits include several famous and rare stamps which will be shown in the Court of Honour and Invited Exhibits, some of which are:

This is the World’s most expensive stamp – the unique 1856 British Guiana 1c magenta – which was bought by its present owner at a Sotheby’s auction on 17.06.2014 for a phenomenal amount of $9.48 million. Its celebrated story of being found in 1873 by a 12 year old schoolboy is legendary.
The Stamp is on a three-year loan to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum.

This is the World’s first printed Postage Stamps – a registration sheet of the Penny Black (before hardening), which is dated 15.04.1840.

Gems gb 2 Pence sheet 2 jpg

This is the earliest known example of a two penny blue, from January 1841.

Both the above sheets (which originally contained 240 specimens) are nearly intact with a number of stamps of each sheet removed. The 1d sheet is being exhibited outside the United Kingdom for the first time ever, while the 2d sheet has never been put on public display before.
These sheets are from the Collection of The Postal Museum of Great Britain and their National Archives.

This superbly restored block of six stamps shows the positions, 1, 6-8 and 11-12 of the plate and represents the 2nd largest known multiple of this provisional New York issue. The handwritten inscription “30” (cents) is from the triple postage of 10 cents, which was charged for distances of over 300 miles. The letter bears the “New York” 3 April 1846 circular date stamp, the arched “PAID” stamp and was posted to Buffalo N.Y.

This is the second commemorative issue to be released by the American post office after the Columbus issue appeared in 1893. It includes a complete post office pane of 25 of the $2 Trans-Mississippi issue of 1898 depicting the Saint Louis Bridge (Eads Bridge).
This is the largest known multiple of the highest denomination of the 9 stamp set. Only 25,000 of these stamps were ever printed with an unknown quantity returned to the post office as unsold and were destroyed in March 1900.

The value of $2 was not initially planned. When it was added, Collectors protested against its high face value, in addition to the other values in the series. This value was printed in one day on 03.06.1898. The $2 was printed on sheets that have narrower spacing between the horizontal rows than between the vertical columns. For this reason, it is extremely difficult to obtain stamps with the top and bottom margins that equal the sides.

The post offices returned their remaining stocks and this included the $2. No records were kept at the time so that it is difficult to determine the actual number of copies sold. This sheet represents the largest known multiples of this value.

Considered to be one of the most valuable US commemorative multiples this block from the 1901 Pan American issue features the Great Lakes steamer “City of Alpena” .
Five sheets were found with inverted frames, of which this block of 20, 13 blocks of 4 and 1 block of 6 are known.

Not only is this the largest recorded multiple of this striking error, it is the largest multiple of any of the classic US inverted centre errors.

What is a Cachet?

In Philately, a cachet is a printed or stamped design or inscription, other than a Cancellation or pre-printed postage, on an envelope, postcard or postal card to commemorate a postal or philatelic event. Cachets are generally issued on the first or the second day of the event being organised.

The Catchet for the World Stamp Show NY 2016:

The above is an image of a cachet issued by the United states Postal Service (USPS) showing the head of the Statue of Liberty and bears the legend “WORLD STAMP SHOW-NY 2016 May 28-June 4, 2016”. It is marked “Official Show Souvenir”.

India Post is also participating in this grand show:

Many exclusive philatelic products are being released by India Post at this event. The Department of Posts, India has matched the themes of Stamps and Miniature sheets issued by the main sponsors – the U.S. Postal Service USPS) and U.N. Postal Administration (UNPA):

UN Peacekeepers:

The logo of the UN Peacekeepers is in the Centre with “INDIA-NEW YORK” and the date of Cancellation “28.05.2016”.

International day of UN Peacekeepers – Stamps issued by the UN Postal Administration (UNPA):

Ahead of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers – celebrated on May 29 – the UN Postal Administration (UNPA) announced the release of six new stamps. The Stamps were launched jointly with the Austrian post on 29.05.2016 and a pre-launch ceremony was held on 28.05.2016 at the world Stamp show, New York 2016. The International Day of UN Peacekeepers was established by the general assembly in 2002 in tribute to all the men and women serving in peace operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage, as well as to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.

Learning Never Ends”:

On the second day (29.05.16), another two Special Covers on the theme “Learning Never Ends” were released.
This Special Cover is titled “Satat Gyan” (in Hindi) and “Learning Never Ends” (in English). The stylised picture shows a student going towards the light of knowledge represented by the rising Sun and books.
This Special Cover is titled “Satat Gyan” (in Hindi) and “Learning Never Ends” (in English). There is the ancient Sanskrit prayer/chant from the ancient Hindu text Brihadaranyaka Upanishad - “Tamso Ma Jyotir Gamaya” (“Lead us from darkness to light”) abridged from the prayer “Asato Ma Sad Gamaya, Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya, Mrityor Ma Amritam Gamaya” (meaning “Lead us from ignorance to truth, Lead us from darkness to light, Lead us from death to deathlessness”). The picture shows a lighted lamp burning in the night leading one into the symbolic light ok knowledge.
The above is an image of the Cancellation Stamp which will be placed on the above two covers. It reads “Satat Gyan” (in Hindi) and “Learning Never Ends” in English. There is a book and the Sun's rays symbolizing learning. The Cancellation is marked "India-New York" and is dated "29.05.2016".

This theme is in consonance with a USPS 15 Cents Education stamp issued in 1980 which conveys the message “Learning Never ends”:

Honoring Extra-ordinary Heroism:
On the third day (30.05.16), another two Special Covers on the theme “Honoring Extra-ordinary Heroism” were released.

The above is an image of the “Param Vir Chakra” the highest medal awarded in India for extraordinary valour in combat and also depicts stamps of five of our Heroes who were awarded this medal for “Extraordinary Heroism”. The Special Cover is titled “Atulya Saahas ko Salaam” (in Hindi) and “Honoring Extraordinary Heroism”.

(Notice that the spelling of the word “Honoring” has been spelt in the American way and not the usual “honouring” spelt with a “U” in India, as the theme is in consonance with the theme of the Forever stamps issued by the USPS).

The above is an image of a Special Cover containing stamps depicting women in India who have displayed extraordinary valour in the face of Adversity through the ages. The Special Cover shows stamps on Rani Laxmi Bai, Begum Hazrat Mahal, Mother Teresa, and Neerja.  The Special Cover is titled “Atulya Saahas ko Salaam” (in Hindi) and “Honoring Extraordinary Heroism”.

The above is an image of the Cancellation Stamp which will be placed on the above two covers. It reads “Atulya Saahas Ko Salaam" (in Hindi) and “Honoring Extraordinary Heroism” (in English). There is an Armed Forces soldier saluting his colleagues for their bravery. The Cancellation is marked "India-New York" and is dated "30.05.2016".
The above issues are in consonance with the USPS issues as under:

THE USPS issues Honouring Extra-ordinary Heroism: The Service Cross Medals:
Previous stamp issuances have depicted the highest military decoration for valour in combat – the “Medal of Honour”. “Honouring Extraordinary Heroism: The Service Cross Medals” recognises the next highest tier of military decorations for valour – the “Distinguished Service Cross” (Army), “Navy Cross” (Navy and Marine Corps), “Air Force Cross” and the “Coast Guard Cross”.
Each stamp consists of a photograph of one of the four medals suspended from a ribbon and shown against a dark blue backdrop.
View of our Planets, Pluto Explored:
On the fourth day (31.05.16), another two Special Covers on the theme “View of our Planets, Pluto Explored” were released.

The above are images of the two Special Covers showcasing a “View of our Planets” and “Pluto Explored” themes. This theme has been carefully selected by India Post in consonance with the “Forever Stamps” titled “View of our Planets” issued by the US Postal Service in 2016:

Views of our Planets: Forever Stamps issued by USPS:

This USPS issue showcases some of the more visually compelling full-disk images of the planets obtained during the era of space exploration. All 8 planets are shown, as Pluto is no longer a “planet”.

Some stamps show the planet’s “true” colour – what one might see while travelling through space. Other images use colours to represent and visualise certain features of a planet based on imaging data. Still others use the near infra-red spectrum to show things which cannot be seen by the human eye in visible light. The verso text explains the images and identifies the spacecrafts and telescopes that helped obtain them.

Pluto Explored: Forever Stamps issued by USPS:

This USPS issue recognises the history making first reconnaissance of Pluto in 2015 by NASA’s New Horizon mission. This souvenir sheet contains two new stamps. The first stamp shows an artist’s rendering of the “New Horizon spacecraft”. The second stamp shows the spacecraft’s striking image of “Pluto” near its closest approach.

The view which is colour enhanced to highlight surface texture and composition is a composite of four images from New Horizon’s Long Range Reconnaissance Imager, combined with colour data from the imaging instrument Ralph. It clearly reveals the now-famous heart-shaped feature.
Classics Forever:
On the fifth day (01.06.16), another two Special Covers on the theme “Classics Forever” were released.

The above is an image of a Special Cover on Mahatma Gandhi depicting four stamps which have been issued at various points of time by India Post. Notice that the background gives the impression that the Special Cover is printed on “Khadi cloth” (an indigenously spun cloth on the Spinning wheel which was one of Mahatma Gandhi’s “favourite instruments” for bringing down the British Raj economy)
The above is an image of a Special Cover on various Indian themes depicting twelve stamps which have been issued at various points of time by India Post.
The above is an image of the Cancellation Stamp which will be placed on the above two covers. It reads “Anmol Ratna" (in Hindi) and “Classics Forever” (in English). There is an image of Mahatma Gandhi facing right. The Cancellation is marked "India-New York" and is dated "01.06.2016"

This is in consonance with the USPS issues titled “Classics Forever”:

The USPS issued this Classics Forever Souvenir sheet in celebration of the long history of US postage stamps and in appreciation of stamp collectors and Philatelists everywhere.

The elaborately designed sheet features elegant new versions of six stamps first issued in the mid-19th Century. The stamps are printed using the intaglio printing method as were the originals.

The stamps covered are – George Washington Stamp (first issued in 1851 at 12 cents), Benjamin Franklin Stamp (first issued in 1851 at one cent), George Washington Stamp (first issued in 1860 at 24 cents), George Washington stamp (first issued in 1860 at 90 cents), Abraham Lincoln Stamp (first issued in 1866 at 15 cents), Benjamin Franklin Stamp (first issued in 1861 at one cent).

The above is an image of the Cancellation Stamp which will be placed on the above two covers. It reads “Rangarang Utsav" (in Hindi) and “Colourful Celebrations” (in English). There is an image of a drummer in full flow. The Cancellation is marked "India-New York" and is dated "03.06.2016"

This theme is in consonance with the USPS Forever Stamp issues as under:

This is a double-sided booklet of 20 stamps containing 10 different designs that are reminiscent of the Mexican craft of “papel picado”. This translates to “pierced paper” although the stamps themselves do not have the paper pierced.
The intricate designs on the stamps which show birds, flowers and symbols do not strictly follow the thematic traditions of the Mexican Art form, but instead are whimsical, colourful vignettes in the style of “papel picado”.

This art style is used for many festivities by Mexican-Americans.
Topical Collecting:
On the eighth day (04.06.16), another two Special Covers on the theme “Topical Collecting” were released.

The above two Special Covers are titled “Vishayparak Dak Tikat Sangrahan Divas” (in Hindi) and “Topical Collecting Day” (in English).

"I always wonder, for issue of any stamp & first day cover, how much man-power / thought process at various levels / designing / approving it at various levels has been involved. And when all this process must have been started? How early to catch-up the scheduled date? Isn't it?"

    1. Indeed, Lalingkar sahab. The process does start way in advance. The approvals have to come from the Government of India, then the designs are made/approved (sometimes after a India-wide competition). Then the entries selected are fitted onto a plate, colour matching, information on the person or event is collated and so on. An entire team's efforts go into finalising the stamp, First Day Covers, Miniature Stamp Sheets and brochures, Cancellation stamps which are designed by the designers/designing team. Then the stamps are printed at a Security Printing Press (presently the SPP at Hyderabad). Sometimes, just when the stamp is about to be released, it is put on hold by the Department of Posts, India, when the person who is about to be honoured or his firms get involved in controversial issue. A recent example is that of O.P. Jindal, where the "stamp issue has been deferred".
In the images above, all these Stamps are "reprints" of Postage stamps issued earlier over the years which has added to the team's work. Also they had to match the "Theme of the Day" for 8 days at the World Stamp Show NY 2016. Not only India, more than 70 countries have conducted similar exercises for this once in a decade show.
