i)           Inauguration of New Delhi, 1931: A set of six stamps:

Calcutta (present day Kolkata) was the capital of the British Raj until December 1911.

On 12.12.1911, during the Delhi Durbar of 1911, George V announced that the Capital of India was being shifted from Calcutta to India. He made this announcement while laying the foundation stone for the Viceroy’s residence in the Coronation Park, Kingsway Camp, New Delhi.

 The new Capital was designed by architects Edwin Lutyens (from 1918 onwards) and Herbert Baker (who joined the project in 1926). The construction of the buildings was given to Sobha Singh. Construction under the project commenced shortly after World War I ended and was completed by 1931. The city was nicknamed “Lutyens’ Delhi” and the Inauguration took place in several ceremonies commencing on 10.02.1931.

The Inauguration of New Delhi was commemorated by a pictorial Series of six stamps issued on 09.02.1931.

The first issues of this Series showed the “War Memorial Arch” (presently called “India Gate”). The value of this Stamp is ½ Anna.

The first issues of this Series showed the “Secretariat”. The value of this Stamp is 3 Annas.

The first issues of this Series showed the “Purana Qila”. The value of this Stamp is ¼ Anna.

The first issues of this Series showed the “Viceroy’s House (present day “Rashtrapati Bhawan”). The value of this Stamp is 2 Annas.

  The first issues of this Series showed the “Dominion Column and the Secretariat”. The value of this Stamp is 1 Rupee.

The first issues of this Series showed the “Council House” (present day “Parliament Building”). The value of this Stamp is 1 Anna.

    ii)     The first Independent India three stamps set – depicting the Ashok Pillar (National Emblem of India), the Indian National Flag and an Aircraft issued on 15.08.1947:

Issued on 15.08.1947, these three stamps depicting the Ashoka Lion Capitol (1½ Annas), National Flag (3½ Annas) and a Douglas IX 4 Aircraft (12 Annas) were the first three stamps of Independent India.

 The above Stamp depicts the Ashoka Capitol which became the emblem of the Government of India. This stamp has a value of 1 ½ Annas

 The above Stamp depicts the Indian Flag, the tricolour – Saffron, white and Red with the Ashoka Chakra at its centre. This stamp has a value of 1 ½ Annas

 The above Stamp depicts a Douglas IX 4 Aircraft. This stamp has a value of 12 Annas.

iii) A set of Four Stamps issued commemorating the Republic of India Inauguration on 26.01.1950:

The set of four stamps issued at the time of Inauguration of the Republic of India. These four stamps depict: Creation of the  Republic of India celebrations with waving of Indian flags and trumpets (2 Annas), remembering the Martyrs who made it happen through their Revolutionary thinking and writings symbolised with an inkpot and quill pen (there is Mahatma Gandhi’s prayer “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram, Patit Pawan Sita Ram” written on four strips of paper) (3 ½ Annas), recognising the importance of tilling the land for growing food and becoming self-sufficient in food grain production and honouring Indian farmers through the symbolism of an iron plough and a ear of wheat (4 Annas) and recognising the contribution of the “Spinning wheel” (Mahatma Gandhi’s pet project) in producing indigenous cloth which went a long way in bringing down the British Raj Economy and self reliance in producing Khadi cloth to Indians (12 Annas).

These changes are seen through the eyes of a young boy and girl who symbolise the aspirations of a young country of which they will be future custodians.
