The Central Bank of Ireland has issued its third and final coin in the immensely popular series titled “Modern Irish Musicians,” which highlighted some of the country’s most well-known singing stars who were acclaimed in Ireland and internationally.
The Header/Banner showcases the Obverse & Reverse of the 15 Euro Silver Coin, againsta background representation of Luke Kelly. The Header is titled - "Luke Kelly - Modern Irish Musicians".
The third coin in the Series depicts the co-founder and band member of The Dubliners, Luke Kelly (1940–1983), which was originally scheduled to go on sale in 2020 and coincided with his 80th Birthday Anniversary but was delayed due to disruptions resulting from the impact of the Chinese Wuhan Virus (also known as "COVID-19") and operational challenges.
The other two coins in this series featured Rory Gallagher (in 2018) and Phil Lynott (in 2019).
About Luke Kelly (1940-1984):
Luke Kelly was born in 1940 in Sheriff Street, Dublin.
He moved to England as a teenager and became involved in the folk music revival.
He returned to Ireland in the early sixties and was a founding member of The Dubliners.
After a brief absence from the group, Kelly re-joined The Dubliners. They gained huge commercial success with hit records and international tours as the Irish folk sound gained popularity.
He remained a member of The Dubliners for the rest of his life but continued to explore other musical territory, recording and touring as a solo artist with even a brief stint in musical theatre.
Luke Kelly passed away in 1984 but by then he had established himself as a truly unique talent in Irish music and culture.
A man known for his pride in his working-class roots, his political activism and his distinctive and passionate voice in both traditional and other songs, to this day he remains an icon both in Ireland and internationally.
The Coin:
The Reverse & Obverse of the 15 Euro Silver Coin, placed side by side
The coin was released by Irish President Michael D. Higgins at St. Lawrence O’ Toole School, the boyhood academy where Kelly attended and in the presence of remaining members of the Dubliners band.
The Reverse of the 15 Euro Silver Proof Coin includes a contemporary image of Kelly depicted with his trademark flowing locks of curly hair and facing three-quarters to the left.
To the left of the portrait is a banjo, one of the instruments Kelly is known for, and also included in the design are the masks of comedy and tragedy, representing entertainment and the styles of songs the Dubliners were known to perform.
The text "Luke Kelly" and the years of his life "1940 – 1984" are placed along the lower-left edge.
The Obverse of the 15 Euro Silver Proof Coin depicts the national insignia of Ireland, the "cláirseach" (or "Celtic harp"), in the centre.
The text "EIRE" and "2020" are positioned on either side of the harp.
