The Royal Mint, UK has released the second coin in its new range of collector coins titled - “Myths and Legends,” which was first released in 2021 year as a Bullion Coin Series.

The second Coin depicts Merlin, the central mythical & legendary wizard in the world of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Merlin’s origins are associated with the legend of Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. He was the most trusted advisor and wizard to King Arthur, as well as being his close and loyal friend.

Merlin seldom takes a single form for long enough to show us his true nature, he eludes definition today, just as he did a millennium ago, and his origins and fate have been lost in the mists of time. 

Merlin first appeared in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s "Historia Regum Britanniae" ("The History of the Kings of Britain") which was a twelfth-century, historical account of Britain. 

Merlin's origins are often tied to Welsh folklore, specifically the bard and wild man "Myrddin Wyllt", who succumbed to madness following a battle and retreated to the Caledonian forest, where he gained the gift of foresight. 

However, the inspiration for the elusive figure likely stems from a blend of mythical characters and legends. 

Over time, Merlin has evolved to become one of the most popular characters in British mythology.

This book contains 24 different stories by different authors on various episodes in Merlin, the wizard’s life and his interactions with King Arthur.

“I am Morgan le Fay – A tale from Camelot” by Nancy Springer (Published in 2002).

Morgan le Fay was an enchantress and a “Fay” (meaning a “sorceress”). She was born to Ingraine, the mother of Arthur, from her husband Gorlois, as such, Arthur was her half-brother. 

She becomes an apprentice to Merlin and a vindictive adversary of Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, with a special hatred for Guinevere. 

In some accounts, she is married to Merlin and they have 12 children. 

She became an indirect instrument in Arthur’s death and that of his knights in the Battle of Camlaan, though she is filled with remorse and is one of the three queens who take Arthur on his final journey to Avalon. She is mentioned in some accounts as an archenemy of Merlin.

More on Merlin the legendary wizard of King Arthur:         

Merlin (Welsh: Myrddin, Cornish: Marzhin, Breton: Merzhin is a mythical figure prominently featured in the legend of King Arthur and best known as a "mage" ("wizard"), with several other main roles. 

His usual depiction, based on an amalgamation of historic and legendary figures, was introduced by the 12th-century British author Geoffrey of Monmouth. His rendering of the character became immediately popular, especially in Wales.

Later writers in France and elsewhere expanded the account to produce a fuller yet multifaceted image, creating one of the most important figures in the imagination and literature of the Middle Ages.

Merlin's traditional biography casts him as an often-mad being, born of a mortal woman, sired by an incubus from whom he inherits his supernatural powers and abilities, most commonly and notably prophecy and shapeshifting. 

Merlin matures to an ascendant sagehood and engineers the birth of Arthur through magic and intrigue.

Later stories have Merlin as an advisor and mentor to the young king until his disappearance from the tale, leaving behind a series of prophecies foretelling the events yet to come. 

A popular version from the French prose cycles describes Merlin being bewitched and forever sealed or killed by his student known as the "Lady of the Lake" (or "Nimue") after falling in love with her. 

In Welsh poetry, Myrddin was a bard driven mad after witnessing the horrors of war, who fled civilization to become a wild man of the wood in the 6th century.  He roams the Caledonian Forest, until cured of his madness by Kentigern (Saint Mungo). 

Geoffrey was also inspired by "Emrys" a character based in part on the 5th-century historical figure of the Romano-British war leader Ambrosius Aurelianus, also known as "Myrddin Emrys".

Ambrosius (or "Myrddin") was discovered when the British king Vortigern attempted to erect a tower at "Dinas Emrys" (City of Emrys). More than once, the tower collapsed before completion.

 

Vortigen's wise men advised him that the only solution was to sprinkle the foundation with the blood of a child born without a father. 

Ambrosius was rumoured to be such a child. When brought before the king, Ambrosius revealed that below the foundation of the tower was a lake containing two dragons battling into each other -  representing the struggle/conflict between the invading Saxons and the native Celtic Britons. 

Things named in honour of the legendary figure have included:

 

- Asteroid 2598 Merlin, 

- companies Merlin and Merlin Entertainments, 

-handheld console Merlin, 

- literary magazine Merlin, 

- Metal Band Merlin, and

-  more than a dozen different British warships called HMS Merlin. 

He was one of eight British magical figures that were commemorated on a series of UK postage stamps issued by the Royal Mail in 2011.

The Bullion Coins:

On the Reverse of the Silver & Gold Bullion Coins the design evokes a sense of the magical wizardry that Merlin is remembered throughout the ages for. 

He is depicted holding a magic staff with an owl perched upon his shoulder. 

To the upper right is a detail of the island of Avalon (the final resting place of King Arthur) in the background. 

The Reverse design is embellished with a frosted finish and hexal relief feature, which enables light to refract on the coin’s surface at different angles. 

On the Coin periphery is the text "MERLIN MYTHS AND LEGENDS. 2023".

On the Obverse of the Silver and Gold Bullion Coins is an effigy of HM King Charles III facing left designed by Martin Jennings, whose initials "MJ" appear below the King's neck. 

The inscriptions on the outer periphery read - "CHARLES III. D.G. REX. F.D. 2023" and the denomination 25 or 100 POUNDS (Gold) or 2 & 5 POUNDS (Silver), and 5 Pounds (Cupro-nickel), as part of the legend surrounding the King’s effigy.
