876) Butterflies of Israel: A Series of Eight coins issued by the Israel Coins and Medals Corporation (ICMC), minted by the Holy Land Mint (2018):

This beautiful Series of eight coins titled "Butterflies of Israel" has been issued in 2018 and depicts the following butterflies:

1) Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus):
First Coin in the Series:

The Obverse of the Coin depicts a beautiful butterfly in full colour on a background of flowers. On the upper periphery the series name "BUTTERFLIES OF ISRAEL" is inscribed in both English and Hebrew. 

Along the lower periphery, the name of the butterfly "PLAIN TIGER" (in both English and Hebrew) is inscribed. 

At right is the logo of the Holy Land Mint and "0.5 OZ. 999 SILVER. 2018" is engraved.

The Plain Tiger butterfly is common in Israel throughout the year, particularly in the warm, moist areas around the Dead Sea. In summer, it migrates Northwards and its mass migration in the Agamon Hula Nature Park 

A big butterfly with an 8.0 centimetre wing-span, it has bright orange and yellow-coloured wings, decorated with white-spotted black borders. The female deposits its eggs on the leaves of milkweeds, its host plant.
2) Common Blue (Polyommatus Icarus):
Second Coin in the Series:


On the Obverse of the Coin, the Common Blue is shown in full colour perched on a background of flowers, leaves and berries. On the upper periphery, the coin series name - "BUTTERFLIES OF ISRAEL" appears in both English & Hebrew.

On the lower periphery is the name of the butterfly - "COMMON BLUE" (in both English and Hebrew). 

At centre right is the logo of the Holy Land Mint, together with the description ".5 OZ. 999 SILVER.2018".

The Common Blue is a small butterfly with a 3.5 centimetre wing-span, common in temperate regions. In Israel, it is found near the Mediterranean from March to November. The male is blue-coloured, while the colours of the female are more brownish. The male guards its territory, driving away intruders. The female deposits its eggs on  leaves of a large genus of perennial herbs known as Ononis.

3) Lesser Fiery Copper (Lycaena thersamon):
Third Coin in the Series:

On the Obverse of the Coin, the Lesser Fiery Copper butterfly is shown in full colour on a background of blue flowers and fruit. On the upper periphery is the series name - "BUTTERFLIES OF ISRAEL", which is inscribed in both English and Hebrew.

On the lower periphery is the name "LESSER FIERY COPPER" (in both English and Hebrew).

At centre right is the logo of the Holy Land Mint together with the description "0.5 OZ. 999 SILVER.2018".

The Lesser Fiery Copper is one of the most beautiful fiery-coloured butterflies in Israel. A small butterfly with a 3.0 centimetres wing-span, it is found throughout the year except in winter, in the area close to the Mediterranean and Southwards, as far as, the Negev Desert.

4) Lesser Spotted Fritillary (Melitaea trivia syriaca):
Fourth coin in the series:

On the Obverse of the coin is depicted the Lesser Spotted Fritillary butterfly in full colour perched on a bunch of flowers, sipping nectar. On the upper periphery is the series name "BUTTEFLIES OF ISRAEL", in both English and Hebrew.

On the lower periphery is engraved the name of the butterfly - "LESSER SPOTTED FRITILLARY" (in both English and Hebrew).

At centre right is the logo of the Holy Land Mint and the inscription - "0.5 OZ. 999 SILVER. 2018".

With its 3.5 centimetre wing-span, black-spotted orange wings, the Lesser Spotted Fritillary butterfly is found in Israel from March to November. In warmer areas, it produces a number of generations in a year, but in cooler areas only one generation.

5) Long-Tailed Blue (Lampides boeticus):
Fifth coin in the series:

On the Obverse of the Coin is seen a beautiful coloured depiction of a Long-Tailed Blue butterfly sitting on top of a flower. On the upper periphery is the name of the coin series " Butterflies of Israel" (in both English & Hebrew).

On the lower periphery if the name - " LONG-TAILED BLUE" (in both English & Hebrew).

At centre right is the logo of the Holy Land Mint and the inscriptions - "0.5 OZ. 999 SILVER. 2018".

The Long-Tailed Blue butterfly is outstanding for its beautiful blue colour. Common in Israel throughout most of the year and in most areas. Its wing-span measures 3.5 centimetres.  The male guards the territory and drives away intruders.

6) Swallow-Tail (Papilio machaon):
Sixth Coin in the Series:


On the Obverse of the Coin is seen a depiction of a Swallow-Tail butterfly in full colour sitting on a bunch of flowers, sipping nectar. The inscription on the upper periphery reads - "BUTTERFLIES OF ISRAEL" (in both English & Hebrew).

On the lower periphery is the name of rhe butterfly "SWALLOWTAIL" (in both English & Hebrew).

At right is the logo of the Holy Land Mint, together with the inscriptions - "0.5 OZ. 999 FINE SILVER. 2018".

The Swallow-Tail butterfly is an attractively coloured big butterfly. It belongs to a family that includes some of the most beautiful butterflies of the world. Its name derives from its long back wings that are tail shaped. Common in Israel, particularly in more hilly regions from March to November, it has an 8.0 centimetres wing-span and is capable of raising five generations in a year.

7) Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui):
Seventh Coin in the series:

The Obverse of the Coin depicts a Painted Lady butterfly, sitting on a bunch of flowers. On the upper periphery is inscribed the name of the series - "BUTTERFLIES OF ISRAEL" (in both English & Hebrew).

On the lower periphery is the name of the butterfly - " PAINTED LADY" (in both English & Hebrew).

At right is the logo of the Holy Land Mint and the inscription - "0.5 OZ. 999 Silver. 2018".

The pretty Painted Lady Butterfly has an excellent migratory ability and for this reason is one of the most common butterflies of the world. Flexible in its choice of host plants and with larvae able to defend themselves well against predators/enemies, it is able to produce several generations in a year.

8) Levantine Marbled White (Melanargia titea):
Eighth Coin in the series:

On the Obverse of the Coin is depicted a Levantine Marbled White butterfly in full colour on a background of flowers. On the upper periphery is inscribed - "BUTTERFLIES OF ISRAEL" (in English & Hebrew).

On the lower periphery is mentioned the name of the butterfly - "LEVANTINE MARBLED WHITE" (in both English & Hebrew).

At right is the logo of the Holy Land Mint and the inscriptions - "0.5 OZ. 999 SILVER. 2018".

The Levantine Marbled White butterfly is common only in the Mediterranean region, from South Turkey to Israel. In Israel, it is found in the area close to the Mediterranean Sea from April to June.


The Common Reverse of all the above 8 coins depicts a variety of butterflies fluttering around flowers.
