891) 75 Years of the First Indian Flag Hoisting at the Andaman & Nicobar Islands by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Freedom Fighter (30.12.1943): A set of three stamps of the values of 1,200 Paise (or Rs.12/-), 2,200 Paise (or Rs.22/-) and 4,100 Paise (or Rs. 41/-) issued by India Post on 30.12.2018:
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands is one of the 7 Union Territories (UTs) of India comprising some 572 islands in its territories comprising about 8,249 sq. kilometres (or 3,185 square miles), of which 325 islands are in the Andaman group, while 247 islands are located in the Nicobar group.
Of these islands, about 38 are permanently inhabited. The Andamans are separated from the Nicobar group by the "Ten Degree Channel" (on the 10 Degree N parallel), which is about 150.0 kilometres ( or 93.0 miles) wide, with the Andamans lying to the North & the Nicobar Islands to the South.
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands have about 450 indigenous tribes of which the Jarawa and Sentinelese maintain their independence and refuse most attempts at contact.

It is recorded that Rajendra Chola I (1014-1042 AD) had established a strategic naval base to launch an expedition against the Sriwijaya Empire (present day Indonesia). The Cholas called the Island group "Ma-Nakkavaram" (meaning "great or open land") as evidenced from a Thanjavur inscription in 1050 AD.
In the 12th & 13th Century the European Traveller Marco Polo referred to this island group as "Necuverann" a distortion of its Tamil name.
On 12.12.1755, a Danish Colony was established on the Nicobar Islands called "New Denmark".
On 01.01.1756, it was renamed "Frederiksoerne" (meaning "Frederick's Island"). The Islands were administered from Tranquebar, in continental Danish India. The Islands were repeatedly abandoned by the Danes and repopulated.
From 1778 to 1784 Austria attempted to establish a colony here renaming the Islands as "Theresia Islands".
In 1789, the British set up a naval base and penal colony on Chatham Island next to Great Andaman, where the town of Port Blair is presently located.
In 1791, the colony was moved to Post Cornwallis on Great Andaman, but the settlement was abandoned due to disease.
On 16.10.1858, Denmark formally ended its claim on the Islands, when it sold the rights to Nicobar Islands to Britain.
In 1858, the British India administration established a colony at Port Blair setting up a penal colony for Indian Freedom Fighters which is known as the infamous Cellular Jail.
In 1872, both Andaman & Nicobar were administered under a single chief commissioner stationed at Port Blair.
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands under the rule of the Indian National Army of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose:
During World War II, Andaman & Nicobar Islands fell under Japanese control and was nominally placed under the authority of Arzi Hukumate Azad Hind of Subhash Chandra Bose, who visited the Islands and renamed them "Shaheed Dweep" (meaning "Martyr's Island") and "Swaraj Dweep" (meaning Self-rule Island").
General Loganathan of the Indian National Army (INA) was appointed Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
On 22.02.1944, General Loganathan along with four INA officers - Major Mansoor Ali Alvi, Sub. Lt. Md. Iqbal, Lt. Suba Singh and stenographer Srinivasan arrived in Port Blair.
On 02.10.1944, the Headquarters of the Civil Administration was established near the Gurudwara at Aberdeen Bazaar.
On 07.10.1945, the Islands were surrendered by the Japanese forces to the British Raj, but not for long, as India gained its Independence on 15.08.1947.
Present Day:
In 1950, the Islands became a part of India and were declared a Union Territory (UTs) in 1956.
Since the 1980s, India has established defence facilities on the Islands, which have a strategic role in the Bay of Bengal and the Malacca Strait. The Islands have the Andaman and Nicobar Command, the only tri-service geographical command of the Indian Armed Forces.
Renaming of important places and commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the first Flag hoisting by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at the Andaman & Nicobar Islands:
On 30.12.2018, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed three islands as a tribute to the Indian National Army (INA) of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose - Ross Island has been renamed as "Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep", the Neil Island as "Shaheed Dweep" and the Havelock Island as "Swaraj Dweep".
This announcement was made during a speech at the Netaji Stadium marking the 75th Anniversary of the hoisting of the Indian Flag by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose here on 30.12.1943.
The Prime Minister began his speech by asking the audience to switch on the flashlights of their mobile phones to honour Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Thousands of mobile flash lights were switched on , providing a visual delight.
He also visited the cells of Cellular Jail where great freedom fighters like Veer Savarkar, Baba Bhan Singh, Indu Bhushan Roy were tortured for years by the British abd declared these cells to be no less than temples.
He also released a commemorative stamp and First Day Cover (FDC) and a commemorative Rs.75/- coin to mark this special day among other special projects for the Islands, including a 50 bed AYUSH hospital, a 50 MW LNG power plant, a sub-marine optical fibre cable between Chennai and Port Blair, a 7 MW Solar power plant and a model solar village and a State Wide Area Network (SWAN) project connecting 12 major Islands.
