923) "Kumbh Mela", Prayagraj (or the "festival of the Sacred Pitcher"): A commemorative stamp of 500 Paise (or Rs.5/-) brought out by India Post on 02.02.2019:

Kumbh Mela (or the "Festival of the sacred pitcher":

The Kumbh Mela is a religious pilgrimage that is celebrated four times over a course of 12 years.

Kumbh Mela is anchored in Hindu Mythology and is the largest public gathering and collective act of faith, anywhere in the world. The Mela draws tens of millions of pilgrims over the course of around 48 days . In the on-going Prayagraj Kumbh Mela, over 200,00,000 pilgrims (or 2.0 crores) to bathe at the confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mystical Saraswati Rivers. Primarily this congregation includes ascetics, saints, "sadhus", "sadhvis", "kalpvasis" and pilgrims from all walks of life.

Origins of the Kumbha Mela:

The origin of the Kumbh Mela was transcribed by the 8th Century philosopher Shankara. The term "Kumbh" comes from the root "kumbhak" (the sacred pitcher of the elixir of immortality). The founding myth of the Kumbh Mela comes from the Puranas (ancient Hindu religious texts). The Puranas recount how Gods and demons fought over the sacred pitcher ("Kumbh") of "Amrit" ("Nectar of immortality"). called the "Ratna of Samudra Manthan" ("Jewel of the churning of the Seas").

The Legend of the "Churning of the Ocean" or "Samudra Manthan":

As elaborated in the "Vedas" (Hindu Religious Texts) and the "Bhagvat Purana", "Vishnu Purana", "Mahabaharat" and the "Ramayan" (all Hindu scriptures & religious books), it is believed that at the beginning of the Creation of the Universe, the "Devas" had lost their strength and to regain it, they thought of churning the "Kseer Sagar" (meaning "Primordial Ocean of Milk" - akin to the Primordial Soup") for gaining possession of "Amrit" (the "nectar of immortality"). They struck a truce with their enemies, the "Asuras", with an understanding that the "Amrit" would be shared equally among both the parties.

During the "Samudra Manthan", several "Ratnas" ("treasures") emerged - goddesses, supernatural animals, "Kalpavriksh" (the tree which granted wishes/boons) valuable adornments, a powerful bow, the moon, a pot of poison and a pot of nectar (or "Amrit" - or "Nectar of Immortality"), among other items.

The "Devas" did not want to share the "Amrit" with the "Asuras". At the instance of Lord Indra, the King of the "Devas", his son Jayant tried to run away with the pot of nectar, but he was followed by some of the "Asuras". During the struggle for its possession, a few drops of the "Amrit" fell at four places corresponding to present day - Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayag), Ujjain and Nasik on Earth. The drops of nectar were received by the holy rivers at these places.

The flight of Jayant and the following pursuit by the "Asuras" lasted twelve divine days which is equivalent to twelve human years and, therefore, the Mela is celebrated every twelve years, staggered at each of the four sacred sites in this cycle.

The corresponding Rivers are believed to have turned into "Amrit" at the cosmic moment, giving pilgrims the chance to bathe in the essence of purity, auspiciousness and immortality.

The cosmic Energy and the religious belief:

Once every twelve years, the same astrological configuration falls into place at one of the four places - Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayag), Nasik and Ujjain - similar to the placement of the planets during the period of the "Samudra Manthan".  This configuration triggers the bubbling of all the holy waters into which the drops of "Amrit" had fallen (the River Saraswati at Prayagraj, the River Ganga at Haridwar, the River Godavari at Nasik and the River Kshipra at Ujjain) and Cosmic Energy begins to spread upto a radius of about 45 kilometres in the holy rivers from the epicentre. Within this invisible bubbling source of the highest Cosmic Energy lies the secret to human redemption, salvation and immortality.

It is believed that "Amrit" keeps on spurting into these holy waters during the entire period of the "Kumbh Mela" and a dip in these waters during this time, results in the subtle energy points in our human aura and our physical human body to absorb these Cosmic Energies fully. This, in turn, has the effect of bringing about a change in the mind, body and spirit, thereby affecting one's destiny to become better.

The Auric absorption of the Cosmic Energy is so high that it helps a pilgrim to connect through the Cosmic Energies with the spirits of 88 generations of his/her past ancestors and purge and absolve them of any sins committed during their lifetimes on Earth.

The Kumbh Mela is held at each of the three places - Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayag), Nasik - while the "Simhasth Kumbh Mahaparv" is held at Ujjain, once every 12 years.

Determining the location of the Kumbh:

The position of the Sun, Moon and Jupiter in different Zodiac signs, determines the location of the "Kumbh" in each of these four centres.

Kumbh in Haridwar - When the Sun is in the Zodiac sign Aries and Jupiter is in Aquarius, the "Kumbh Mela" is held in Haridwar.

Kumbh in Allahabad (Prayag) - When the Sun is in Capricorn and Jupiter is in Taurus, it is held at Allahabad (Prayag).

Kumbh in Nasik: When Jupiter enters the Zodiac sign Leo, it is held in Nasik. It is also held in Nasik, when Jupiter, Sun and Moon enter the Zodiac sign Cancer on "Amavasya".

Simhasth Kumbh Mahaparv in Ujjain: When the Sun is in the Zodiac sign Aries and Jupiter is in Leo, it is held in Ujjain.

There is a mention of "Kumbh" and the bathing ritual associated with it in the Rig Veda. It speaks of the benefits of bathing at the "Sangam" (confluence of the three Rivers - Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati during this period, elimination of negative influences and rejuvenation of mind and soul. Prayers for the "Kumbh" are also mentioned in the Atharva Veda and Yajur Veda.

The main bathing days of the Prayagraj "Kumbh Mela" are during -  Makar Sankranti, Paush Purnima, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami, Maghi Purnima and Maha Shivratri.

Historical accounts of "Kumbh Melas":

"Kumbh Mela" got wide-spread recognition across geographies during the rule of King Harshvardhan (590-647 AD) as per historical evidences. The famous Chinese traveller Huan Tsang prominently mentioned the grandeur of the "Kumbh Mela" in his travelogue. His accounts also mentioned King Harshvardhan's charities at the confluence of the holy Rivers, where he distributed gifts and donations to the scholars and "sanyasis" ("mendicants" and holy men). The King used to hold a great quinquennial assembly on the sands of the holy confluence at Prayag and would distribute all his possessions.

As mentioned earlier, the geographical location of the "Kumbh Mela" spans over four locations in India and the Mela site keeps rotating between one of the four pilgrimages on the four sacred Rivers, as per astrological calculations. Each site's celebration is based on a distinct set of astrological positions of the Sun, the Moon and Jupiter. The celebrations occur at the exact moment when these positions are fully occupied, as it is considered to be the holiest time.

The "Kumbh Mela" is an event that intrinsically  encapsulates the science of astronomy, astrology, spirituality, ritualistic traditions and socio-cultural customs and practices, making it extremely rich in knowledge.

The participants:

Pilgrims to the Mela come from all sections of the society - ranging from "Sadhus" ("saints") and the "Naga Sadhus" who practice "sadhana" and keenly follow a strict path of spiritual discipline, to hermits who leave their seclusion and come to visit civilisation only during the "Kumbh Mela", to seekers of spirituality and the common practitioners of Hinduism.

During the "Kumbh Mela", several ceremonies  take place - the traditional procession of "Akharas" (called "Peshwai") on elephant backs, horses and chariots, the shining swords and the rituals of Naga Sadhus during the "Shahi Snan" and many other cultural activities that attract millions of pilgrims to attend the Mela.

The present Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj:

The "Kumbh Mela" at Prayagraj is widely considered as the most significant among all the Kumbh festivals held at other locations. It is considered as the "source of light and knowledge". It is believed that Prajapati Brahma performed the "Ashvamedha Yajna" at Dashashvamedha Ghat situated at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna Rivers and created the universe due to which, it is the most famous and significant among all other Kumbh festivals.

Apart from its primary bathing rituals, the social aspect of the festival also revolves around the various Yajnas, the chanting of Vedic Mantras, holy elucidations, traditional dances, devotional songs, programmes based on mythological stories and prayers. Religious assemblies are held where doctrines are debated, standardised and conducted by renowned saints and sages. A prominent part of the festival is the act of donations to the poor and helpless, to the saints and to cows. Donations range from basic food and clothing to even precious metals.

Described in the UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity:

Kumbh Mela has been inscribed on the UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Uttar Pradesh Government has envisioned the Kumbh Mela at Proyagraj as - "Divya Kumbh, Bhavya Spectacular Kumbh").

The welfare of all beings, sharing of noble thoughts and maintaining good relationships with all beings across the world is the core message prevalent during the Kumbh Festival. Kumbh has been spiritually uniting the people of India and across  the world since time immemorial and will continue to do so for many centuries to come.

    3. It is more a question of religious faith and belief. The waters are perhaps changing in their flow every now and then. We missed the Ujjain Simhast Mahakumbh, even though the official organisers had made special arrangements for us.

  4. Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, is a vibrant city in India. It offers numerous captivating places to see in Prayagraj. The iconic Triveni Sangam, where three holy rivers converge, attracts pilgrims. The majestic Allahabad Fort, the historical Anand Bhavan, and the serene Khusro Bagh are also noteworthy attractions in Prayagraj.
