The Central Bank of Ireland has issued a 15 Euro Silver Proof Coins on 10.07.2019 to celebrate/mark the Centenary of the First Trans-Atlantic Aviation.
On 15.06.1919, John Alcock and Arthur Brown landed their Vickers Vimy Airplane in a bog near Clifden in Connemara, County Galway.
Interestingly, in 1913, the Daily Mail had offered a prize of 10,000 Pounds (presently valued at around one million Euros) to the first aviator who would cross the Atlantic.
World War I began in the following year (1914) and the competition was suspended, only to be reopened in late 1918.
The British aviation pilots flew in a two-man Vickers Vimy Biplane from St. John's in Newfoundland, Canada and crash-landed on what seems from the air to be level ground at Derrigimlagh Bog, Clifden. Neither pilot was injured.
They had achieved the first non-stop Trans-Atlantic flight with a duration of 16 hours and 28 minutes, landing about 25 miles North of their target destination.
The Commemorative Coins:
The Commemorative 15 Euro Silver Proof Coins have been minted by the Royal Dutch Mint at their facilities in Utrecht, on behalf of the Central Bank of Ireland.
The Reverse of the 15 Euros Silver Proof Coin, issued to celebrate this significant Centenary depicts the model of a Vickers Vimy Biplane, which was flown across the Atlantic Ocean in the centre of the design on this face. There is a clear outline of the island of Ireland, seen below the airplane, which also doubles up as a period style map which helps to emphasise the pilot's peril and demonstrates the scale of their accomplishment in travelling from Newfoundland to Ireland for the very first time, without stopping.
The inscription on the upper periphery reads - "100 YEARS OF TRANSATLANTIC AVIATION". In the upper half of the coin is also placed the denomination of the coin "15 EURO".
The Obverse of the 15 Euro Silver Proof Coin depicts the National Emblem of Ireland - the Harp - with the name of the issuing country "EIRE" on the left periphery and the year of issue "2019" on the right periphery.
