Jagannath
Temple:
The Jagannath Temple of
Puri, Orissa is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath.
The original forms of
Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra constitute the trinity of deities sitting on
the bejewelled platform or the “Ratnabedi”
in the inner sanctum. The “Sudarshan Chakra”
deities of Madanmohan, Sridevi and Vishwadhatri are also placed on the
Ratnavedi.
The
Temple:
The Temple was constructed
in the 12th Century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva atop its
earlier ruins. The Jaga Mohan and the Vimana portions of the Temple were built
during his reign (1078 – 1148 CE).
In 1174 CE, the Oriya
ruler Ananga Bhima Deva rebuilt the Temple to its present shape.
The Temple is sacred to
the Vaishnava traditions and also to
Saint Ramananda who was closely associated with the Temple. It is also of great
significance to the followers of the Gaudiya
Vaishnavism, whose founder Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was a great follower of the
Deity.
Legends:
Legendary descriptions are
found in the Skanda Purana, Brahma Purana and other Puranas ( all ancient Hindu texts) and, later,
in Oriya Literature where Lord Jagannath
is mentioned as Lord “Neela Madhaba” (or
“Blue Krishna”) by a Savar King (or tribal
chief) named Visvavasu.
Having heard about the deity, a later King
Indradyumana sent a Brahmin priest, Vidyapati who after a lot of trouble
managed to find the deity inside a cave, but the deity disappeared & got
hidden in the sand when the King tried to see it. The King heard an “Aakashvani” (“celestial voice”) telling
him that he will eventually come to see the deity.
So the King performed a
horse sacrifice & built a magnificent Temple for lord Vishnu and installed
an idol of “Narasimha” (Lord Vishnu in
his “Avatar” of half-lion & half
man). During his sleep, the King had a vision of Lord Jagannath in which, the
King was directed to locate a fragrant tree on the sea-shore and make idols out
of it. The King proceeded to locate the piece of wood and make idols of Lord
Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra and the Sudarshan
Chakra out of the divine tree and installed them in the Temple.
Another traditional legend,
has it that, at the end of the “Treta Yug”
(epoch in Hindu Mythology), the original image of Lord Jagannath (a deity form
of Vishnu) manifested itself (“Swayambhu”)
near a banyan tree, on the the sea-shore
in the form of an “Indranila Nilamani”
(meaning “Blue Jewel”). It was so dazzling that the God “Dharma” or “Yama” (God of
Death) hid it in the sand. In the “Dwapar
Yug” (epoch in Hindu Mythology), King Indradyumna of Malwa wanted the
mysterious Jewel to manifest itself and underwent harsh penance to locate the
same. During his penance, Lord Vishnu directed him to go to the Puri seashore
where he found a floating log from which Vishwakarma (the architect of the Gods)
fashioned out a magnificent Temple to house the idols and Vishnu himself
appeared in the guise of a carpenter to make the idols on one condition – that he
was to be left undisturbed until he finished the work.
But, after two weeks, the
Queen became very anxious. She thought that the carpenter had died because no
sound was coming from the temple, so she requested the King to open the Temple
door. They went in and saw Vishnu at work, but as per his condition, he left
the idols half-finished without any hands. An “Aakashvani” told the Royal couple to install the idols in their
unfinished shape. Although the idols have
no hands, they are believed to be watching over the affairs the World and
granting boons to their devotees.
The Temple is among the
Hindu “Char Dham” (Four divine places
of pilgrimage) comprising Rameshwaram,
Badrinath, Puri and Dwarka.
Nabakalebara-2015:
At
the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Orissa, the uniqueness about the idols of the deities
is that they are made of wood instead of stone or metals as is seen in most
other temples. As such, every 12 to 19 years, these wooden idols are required
to be replaced by using sacred trees that have to be carved out as exact
replicas of the old idols.
The name “Nabakalebar” (“Naba” means “new”, while “Kalebar”
means “body”) is given to an ancient ritual/ceremony associated with the Lord
Jagannath Temple, Puri (Orissa, India) when the idols of Lord Jagannath,
Balabhadra, Subhadra and Sudarshan Chakra are replaced by a new set of idols. “Nabakalebar” is a symbolic recreation of
wooden forms of the deities.
It is believed that a year
which has two months (“Adhikmas” or “Malamaas”) of “Ashaadh” as per the Hindu calendar is auspicious for conducting the
ceremony. This usually occurs every 12 to 19 years from the previous Nabakalebar.
The reason behind this
ceremonial tradition is a highly secret ceremony called “Nabakalebar” which entails an intricate set of rituals that
accompany the renewal of the wooden statues.
The deities are made from
a special variety of Neem wood known as “Daru
Bramha”. Preparations for the ceremony start sometime in the month of “Chaitra”. The last such ceremony took place in 1996 (Gregorian calendar). 2015 is
the year for the next ceremony/ritual which was held in July 2015.
“Jima Bera Paritagya” (meaning “leaving the old deity” and
consecration of the new one. Just as a
person puts on new clothes, giving up the new ones, the soul similarly accepts
new material bodies, giving up the old and worn out ones).
The above philosophical
view is applied to Shri Jagannath also.
According to different arcane
protocols followed from time immemorial in the Temple, the ritual/ceremony for
changing the idols has been in practice. The new idols of the deities are made
of “Neem” tree wood basically along
with Musk, sandalwood and several other rare combinations and they undergo
change of “Vigraha” before the “Adhik Asaadh” ends.
Ordinary Neem tree wood
cannot be used to make the deities. A well defined criteria has to be adhered
to before the Neem trees are labelled as a “Daru
Bramha” fit for making the deities:
The “daru” of Jagannath should have four main branches. The bark
of the tree should have a sign of a “Shankh”
(or a “conch shell”) and a “Chakra” on it. There should be a cremation ground
near the tree and an anthill near the tree and a snake hole at the roots of the
tree. The tree should be situated near a river or pond or a three-way crossing
or be surrounded by three mountains. There should be no nests of birds on the
tree and no bird should have ever perched there. The tree should be surrounded
by other trees preferably Varuna, Sahada
and Belva. There should be a temple
of Lord Shiva in the neighbourhood of the tree and a heritage site.
The “daru” of Balbhadra should have seven branches. The skin of
the tree should be of light brown or white colour. It should have a sign of
plough and pestle on it. Near the tree should be a heritage site and a
graveyard.
The “daru” of Subhadra should have five branches. The bark of
the tree should be yellowish. There should be a sign of a lotus flower on the
tree.
The “daru” (log) of Sudarshan Chakra should have three branches.
The skin (bark) of the Neem tree should be reddish.
Locating
the four holy trees requires divine intervention. As per tradition, the priests
of the Jagannath Temple, Puri worship Maa Mangala at the Kakatpur Mangala Temple.
It is believed that the Goddess appears to them in their dreams revealing the
location of the holy trees.
Apart from the regulation associated with the
selection of the trees, there are various rituals associated with locating the
same and bringing them to the Temple Premises.
Puri geared up for Nabakalebar after the four sacred trees
were located. The trees are cut down after appropriate rituals and the logs are
transported by small carts pulled by devotees all the way to the Jagannath Temple.
Starting at an auspicious
hour in secrecy, the logs are carved into Deities within the Temple premises.
On the midnight of “Adhik Asaadh Krishna Chaturdashi”, the “Tattva Padarth” or “Bramha” (meaning the “Life Substance/Essence. The “Tatva Padarth” or Brahma is supernatural”) is transferred from the old deities to the
new ones. After this the new deities are worshipped and the old deities are
buried in the sand (Koili Baikunth)
inside the Temple premises.
Elaborate rituals,
numerous myths and several celestial incidents are associated with this
auspicious ceremony.
The exact procedure of the
transformation of images has been mentioned in the Sanskrit manuscripts written
on palm leaves kept in the Temple. Only the three head priests have the responsibility
of reading and interpreting them.
On the morning of the
second day, the new Deities are seated on the altar or the “Ratna-Singhasan”. On this day, the daily
routine of the Temple finally begins again, after a lapse of nearly 58 days.
Flower garlands and new garments are given to the new Deities along with food
and worship. Devotees can come into the Temple for praying before the Deities.
On the third day, the new
deities emerge from the Temple for the biggest Chariot Festival held in India.
The “Nabakalebar” draws millions of people from across the Globe to
Puri.
About
the Jagannath Rath Yatra Festival:
The Jagannath Rath Yatra Festival is held on Asaadh Shukla Dwitiya (Second day in the
bright fortnight of Asaadh month) is believed to be more than 5000 years old
and a highly spiritual experience.
According to the Katha
Upanishad (Hindu Religious text), this Festival mentions the human body as a “Rath” (Chariot) and the “Saarathi” (driver/charioteer) is God, who
drives the chariot towards the material existence. The wheels are the
significance of valour. The horses are perseverance and persistence and
synonymous with vigour, self-discipline, tolerance, charity and discrimination,
whereas pity, equanimity and forgiveness are the reins of the horses.
Traditionally, the Rath Yatra
is celebrated annually in Puri, Orissa, when the deities of Lord Jagannath (red
and yellow chariot called “Chakradhwaja”
or the “tumultous & blissful sound”), his brother Balbhadra (red and green
chariot called “Taladhwaja” or the “Sound
of Perfect Rhythm”) and sister Devi Subhadra (red and black chariot called “Padmadhwaja” or “the Destroyer of Ego
and Pride”) come out of the temple for all to see.
Each deity visits the
"Guidicha" Temple in their specific chariots drawn by devotees. The return
journey to the Temple of the chariots is called “Bahuda Yatra”. The last “Rath
Yatra” took place on 18.07.2015 with great fanfare and religious
fervour, with the new deities.
