1291) The Romantic Poets, UK: I) A Combo of  10 Stamps (by Royal Mail UK) and a 5 Pounds Commemorative Coin (by Royal Mint, UK) on the 250th Birth Anniversary of William Wordsworth includes the Romantic (Nature) poets - John Clare, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Blake, Walter Scott, Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Wordsworth, Mary Robinson, Letitia Eilzabeth Landon, John Keats & Lord Byron: Date of Stamp set issue: 07.04.2020:

On  the 250th Anniversary of William Wordsworth's Birth (born on 07.04.1770), exactly 250 years to the day, this Stamp set of ten stamps, by Royal Mail UK, celebrates the renowned poet, as well as, Romantic poetry.

William Wordsworth is regarded as the father of the "Romantic Era" of British poetry. He was a Poet Laureate and remains one of the UK's most popular poets.

The word 'romantic' has a much wider meaning than 'love' to define the poets of the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. In an era of huge social upheaval, the Romantic poets reacted against the order and rationalism of the preceding Enlightenment Era and highlighted the importance of expressing real personal feelings. They had a sense of responsibility to society - they felt it was their duty to use theirb poetry to inform and inspire others and even to change society.

Wordsworth was concerned about the elitism of earlier poets, their highbrow language and subject matter which was not accessible to ordinary people. He maintained that poetry should be democratic; that it should be composed in "the language really spoken by men" and he launched his ideas when he, with Coleridge, published their "Lyrical Ballads" (in 1798).

Each of these ten stamps features the works of the key Romantic poets - John Clare, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Blake, Walter Scott, Percy Bysshe Shelly, William Wordsworth, John Keats, Lord Byron and two lady poets - Mary Robinson and Letticia Landon, who in their time were extremely popular and among the first women to support themselves solely by writing.

I was studying in La Martiniere College, Lucknow from 1970-1975, which is when I got acquainted with the works of seven of these poets as part of the course curriculum. Our English Literature and Language books were in line with British courses and for my Final Examination in 1974 (Indian School Certificate/Senior Cambridge) our English Language papers came from Cambridge.

These Stamps will be of great interest to everyone who has a keen or passing interest in literature, poetry, creative writing - particularly Romanticism - as well as, admirers of Wordsworth and fellow writers/poets.

This Information (Filler)  Card provides the following description:

"The  ROMANTIC POETS - Romanticism is the term that historians have given to a movement of cultural change that swept across Europe in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, coinciding with developments such as the French Revolution and, in Britain, the Industrial Revolution and the birth of mass urbanisation.

It was a movement in which poetry played a major role in changing people's attitudes to the natural world, to childhood and to the very idea of self-expression.

One of the German Romantics wrote of a "declaration of the rights of human feeling", implying a revolution of the emotions to match the rights of man proclaimed by the American and French Revolutions. This was also the era when the British slave trade was abolished and the rights of women were voiced by Mary Wollstonecraft, mother-in-Law of Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelly (whose wife, Mary, wrote Frankenstein, the great Romantic novel).

The figure who came to be regarded as the greatest poet of the age was William Wordsworth - the 250th anniversary of whose birth is marked with the issue of these stamps.

Born in the English Lake District, he made his poetry out of his childhood memories and the people, the communities and the landscapes of his home territory.

Romanticism was above all a return to nature: as we see from the quotations on these stamps, poets turned again and again to birds and flowers, lakes and mountains, the rainbow in the sky and the inspiring breeze, as images of the things that we should cherish and preserve in times of stress and change. Whenever we gain refreshment from a walk in the country or take joy in the sight of a beautiful view or the sound of birdsong, we are in debt to the Romantics."

In the centre of this Information Card is a verse from "The Eve of Saint Mark" by John Keats in his handwriting -

"The chilly sunset faintly told
Of unmatured green vallies cold
Of the green thorny bloomless hedge
Of rivers new with springtide sedge
Of Primroses by shelter'd rills
Against daisies on the aguish hills"
