Kyrgyzstan has issued on 31.01.2019, the new Lunar year Stamp, which celebrates the "Year of the Pig". This is the  second year in the 12 year long series, which concludes in 2030.

How does the Lunar or Chinese Zodiac work?

I consulted some of the books which have been kept in my personal library and got acquainted with some interesting facts about the Chinese Zodiac/calendar:

The exact origins of the 12 animal signs is rather lost in the obscurity of time, but there is no doubt that they originated in China. In terms of Chinese astrological "history", the 12 animals are a rather  recent introduction - for it seems that in the 2nd Century BC, Ssu Ma Chi'en (163-85 BC), who was the grand astrologer to Emperor Wu Ti, wrote the Shi Chi or "historical record" which was a complete history of the Chinese up to that time. In this book, there is no "Zodiac" or mention of the 12 animals.

Originally, the 12 year cycle that it takes the planet Jupiter to complete one orbit of the Sun was believed to have defined the earlier calendars. The Chinese still call this cycle "the Great Year" and each month corresponds to one of our own years.

By the  10th Century AD, however, after Buddhism had been established in China, Calendar Almanacs, such as those written by the Tibetan monks in exile in the "Caves of the Thousand Buddhas" monastery in the remote reaches of North-western China, depicting the 12 animals, came into existence.

The legend of the Conference of animals called by the Buddha and naming of the 12 year cycle after 12 animals, for the Chinese Calendar:

According to a legend, it was the Buddha (583-463 BC), who created the12-animal cycle. He is believed to have invited all the animals in the land to hold a conference together. The Buddha was not surprised, as in his wisdom, he knew that some of the animals were friendly towards others, while others were enemies.

To encourage attendance, he decided to name the years after the first twelve animals, in order of their arrival.

An invitation from the Buddha was hard to resist, and when they heard the news, all the animals set off at once, each determined to be the first to arrive.

Tiger, because of his energy and speed, at first took the lead, soon, though, he began to tire and the early lead that he had achieved over his next rival Ox, who may have been slow, but had great stamina, soon dissipated. Ox reached the Buddha ahead of Tiger and prepared to bow down mow to receive his honour.

But, what the sturdy Ox did not know, was that clever Rat has sneaked a ride on his tail !! Just before Ox's nose touched the floor at the Buddha's feet, nimble and swift Rat ran up Ox's tail, along his back and jumped off his nose, thus winning the race to be the first to bow before the Buddha. So Rat (or "Tse" is its Chinese name), became the first animal in the Chinese Zodiac, followed by a rather resentful Ox ("Chou").

Tiger ("Yin"), Rabbit ("Mao"), Dragon ("Chen"), Snake ("Si"), Horse ("Wu"), Goat ("Wei"), Monkey ("Shen"), Rooster ("You"), Dog ("Xu") and Pig ("Hai") all followed, and in that order, paid homage to the Buddha and were each honoured with a year.

Interestingly, Dragon is the only mythical beast in the Chinese Circle of Zodiacal animals.

According to the Lunar or Chinese Zodiac, each year is assigned to the above-referred animals according to a 12-year cycle. As such, the Year of the Pig includes, for example - 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019 and 2031.

This year is "Year of the Pig" (2019):

As with Western Zodiac, persons born within that year are said the possess certain personality traits or have pre-destined luck in romance, fortune and other aspects which bring happiness or sorrow.

The Sign of the Pig emphasises the importance of family. Those born under this sign are considered astrologically very fortunate, as Pig is associated with virility and fertility. The Sign of the Pig is associated with characteristics of sincerity, generosity and capability, with great strength of character.

Persons born under the Sign of the Pig are honest, courageous, hard-working, caring, simple and love their food. They are very industrious and with careful planning can achieve their goals. They love to complete their goals/projects.

They are ideally suited to technical, scientific and practical careers, and because thay are good listeners are able to deal with people and make good managers. They hate hypocrisy and lying.

The celebration of the "Year of the Pig" (2019):

It is a tradition that in celebration of the Chinese New Year, people from all over the world exchange gifts. Gifts of money are still the most frequently chosen presents in China. Traditionally, they are put in red envelopes and there is an old Chinese saying that at the end of the day, you receive almost as much money, as you have given away.

The second most popular gift in China is the lucky symbol connected to the Chinese Zodiac that initiates the new Lunar Year. Countless gifts  shaped like or depicting a pig were exchanged to mark the "Year of the Pig".

909) Leisure Time - Memories: From the website of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh: Setting up/establishing of the Physiology Department and the new Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) Campus by my late father Dr. J.N. Prasad:

I happened to visit the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) website for some material for a post which I was working on and I was pleasantly surprised to find the following information about the Physiology Department, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh.

My father Dr. J.N. Prasad was the first Senior Professor/Chairman to join the JNMC on 2nd October 1962 and the Medical College traces its date of establishment from the date of his joining.

The Department of Physiology which he headed was, in fact the first Department to be set up in the newly envisaged Medical College.

Working from the old Physics Department building of the AMU, he was instrumental in planning the layout of the new Medical College Campus, the medical equipment, teaching facilities etc. I remember that there were extensive meetings with the architects, the doctors of the JNMC, the equipment suppliers. Everything was meticulously planned, including the Onion domes, which are an integral part of Muslim architecture, the Car Parking areas et al.

He even went on to officiate as the Vice Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University for some time.

The following excerpt is taken from the Aligarh Muslim University website:

"The Department of Physiology is the primary department to have been started when J.N. Medical College came into existence on 2nd October 1962. Prof. J.N. Prasad, M.D. (Physiology), M.S. (OPhth) joined the department as Chairman along with Dr. Wajihul Hasan, MBBS as Demonstrator. Physiology Department is shifted to present building in June 1971 from the old Department of Physice of the Aligarh Muslim University.

150 students in MBBS and 40 BDS students are admitted every year since 1996 and are undergoing teaching/training of Physiology. MD and PhD (Physiology) was started in 1973. Every year 5 Post Graduate students are admitted. The degree of MBBS and MD Physiology is recognised by the Medical Council of India.

There are three laboratories namely Human, Haematology and Mammalian/Amphibian for the UG and PG students as recommended by the Medical Council of India. The main field of research in the department is on clinical physiology. The Department has produced one Ph.D (Physiology) and 44 MD (Physiology) since 1973.

The Faculty members are actively engaged in research work and have published more than 250 papers in National and International journals. Faculty of the department has received National level awards in cardiovascular and Medical Education.

Many teachers are honoured by International fellowship of different countries to attend conferences and workshops related to Physiology and Medical Education.

Department also provides Neurophysiological support to the hospital patients in the form of Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA), Electromyography (EMG) and Visual Evoked Potential (VEP).

The Department has recently started Computer Assisted Amphibian Lab (CAAL), inaugurated by Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. Zamiruddin Shah."

908) A new 100 Boliviano Banknote from Bolivia: issued by the "Banco Centrale de Bolivia"  (Central Bank of Bolivia) on 15.01.2019 under its new 2018 Banknote Series:

For more information on three other Banknotes (50, 20 & 10 Boliviano), already circulated in the new 2018 Banknote Series by the "Banco Centrale de Bolivia" and the evolution of Banknotes in Bolivia, please visit the following link:

Bolivia (officially known as "The Plurinacional State of Bolivia") isa landlocked country located in Western-central South America. Its capital is Sure, but the seat of government and financial centre is in La Paz. The largest city is Santa Cruz de la Sierra. It is bordered to the North and East by Brazil, to the South-east by Paraguay, to the South by Argentina, to the North-west by Peru.

Its population of about 11.0 million people is multi-ethnic and includes Amerindians, Mestizos, Europeans, Asians and Africans. Before Spanish colonisation, the Andean region of Bolivia was part of the INCA Empire. Spanish conquistadors coming from Cuzco and Asuncion occupied the region during the 16th Century AD.

The Independence Movement/Revolution of 1809 was followed by 16 years of intense wars, before the Republic was established by Simon Bolivar, a Venezuelan National Hero, whose leadership liberated several South American countries, including Bolivia, from the Spanish yoke.

The Boliviano is the currency of Bolivia, denominated in 100 Cents or Centavos in Spanish. Its name is derived from Simon Bolivar, Venezuelan National Hero.

The 2018 Banknote Series (or the Second Series):

In 2018, the Banco Centrale de Bolivia (or "The Central Bank of Bolivia") has introduced new designs in a family of five Banknotes which are replacing the existing designs with the theme of "Figures of the Libertarian deed, Flora and Fauna in danger of extinction and National Heritage".

These Banknotes will bear the official name of the country "Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia" to reflect the multi-culturalism of the country and all its citizens.

The denominations included in this Series are - 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Bolivianos, which retain the presently circulating numerical values.

The predominant colours of the new Banknotes are similar to the presently circulating ones - 10 Boliviano (blue), 20 Boliviano (orange), 50 Boliviano (violet), 100 Boliviano (red) and 200 Boliviano (brown).

All denominations are printed on cotton paper as hitherto-before.

The denominations are scheduled to be issued from April 2018 until 2019 at intervals of three months approximately. Three denominations have already been circulated - 50, 20 and 10 Boliviano. The 100 Boliviano Banknote has been issued on 15th January 2019, while the Banknote denomination of 200 Boliviano is expected to be introduced into circulation in April 2019.

The printing of these Banknotes is being done by Oberthur Fiduciare SAS.

The existing Banknotes will continue to be in circulation, until they are used up or taken out of circulation by the Banks on deposit thereat

The Front of the new 100 Boliviano Banknote, shown against a background image of the Back of the Banknote

The Front of the 100 Boliviano Banknote depicts three legendary historical personalities, Juana Azurduy de Padilla, Alejo Calatayud and Marshal Antonio Jose de Sucre.

She was awarded the rank of a generalby Argentina in 2009 and the title of Mariscal - the highest military rank by Bolivia in 2011.

Alejo Calatayud: He was a silversmith who led the first mestizo (on of mixed race with Spanish and indigenous heritage) uprising against Spanish colonists.

Marshal Antonio Jose de Sucre: He was a close friend of Simon Bolivar, second President of Bolivia, fourth President of Peru and freedom fighter for Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia.

In the centre of this face is depicted a view of the famous Casa de la Moneda (meaning "The House of Money" or the "Mint") in the city of Potosi.

On the Back of the 100 Boliviano Banknote is seen the landscape of the Arco Ins Falls located in the department of Santa Cruz.

The fauna and flora included on the Back is the Blue Paraba - a bird from Bolivia's East known for its large size upto 30 inches and the Flor patuju, a flower recognised as a patriotic symbol in the Bolivian Constitution.

One image of the Blue Paraba contains a device showing circles that change colour from green to blue when tilted.

A 1.57 inch security thread has an image of de Padilla and the denominational value that switches from red to gold when tilted.

The Banknote has been printed on 100% cotton, like the other Banknotes in this Series.
