3495) Iċ-Ċittadella and Rabat comprise the city of Victoria, Malta: A €10 (Ten Euro) Silver Coin features the City: Date/Year of Coin issue: 09/2024:

The city of Victoria, comprising Rabat and iċ-Ċittadella, is the regional capital of Gozo:

Built on high ground in the centre of the island, the city has ancient roots which date back at least to the Bronze Age

In 1600, the Order of St John commissioned Giovanni Rinaldini, an Italian military engineer to remodel and upgrade the defences of iċĊittadella.

Although by the 1760s the military importance of iċ-Ċittadella diminished, it remained the administrative seat of government in Gozo.

In 1887, at the request of some prominent Gozitans, and on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, the Ċittadella and Rabat were designated as a city, and by the Queen's consent named "Victoria".

In 2014, a largescale rehabilitation and restoration of iċ-Ċittadella was initiated.

The project won the 2022 Regiostars Awards. IċĊittadella has been on Malta's tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1998.

This coin is the result of a collaboration project between the Central Bank of Malta and the Ministry for Gozo and Planning.

Since time immemorial, travellers and navigators have given names to geographical features.

As Antarctica was the last of the continents to be discovered, the first seal hunters who travelled along its coasts began to name the islands they discovered and the most notable geographical features.

Thus, names appeared that were descriptive of the activity they carried out there, such as “Whaling Bay”, of their physical appearance, such as “Half Moon Island”, or of their rulers, such as “Queen Maud Mountains”.

Over time, names of legendary explorers were added to these names, such as “Amundsen Sea”, “Shackleton Glacier” or “Scott Island”, among many others.

With the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959, it became a place of solidarity between nations, without borders or weapons, open to all and where the only activities that can be carried out are related to Peace and Science. From that moment on, the names of scientists began to appear on its maps.

Thus, in 2020, the highest Antarctic authority, the SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) approved, at the proposal of the Bulgarian Antarctic Committee, that an island on that continent be named after the Spanish researcher, explorer and writer Javier Cacho. In recognition of his professional career on that continent and his work in disseminating information about Antarctica.

The island is in the vicinity of Isla Nevada, one of the 11 large islands of the South Shetland archipelago, located at the end of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is a striking rocky island 750 m long and 350 m wide, with heights close to 75 meters.

When it was discovered at the beginning of the 19th century, it seemed to be one end of the Hall Peninsula, but a few decades ago the immense snow bridge of almost 200 meters in length that joined it melted. Today, it is the only island that bears the name of a living Spaniard.
