3426) 320 Years Anniversary of Gibraltar under British Sovereignty as a British Overseas Territory (BOT): A 50 Pence Coin issued by Gibraltar celebrating the milestone: Date/Year of Coin issue: 03.10.2024:
The name Gibraltar comes from the Arabic phrase Jabal Ṭāriq, which means "Mount of Tariq".
The name is a tribute to Tariq ibn Ziyad, an 8th-century North African military leader who led the Muslim conquest of Iberia in 711 AD by landing at the foot of the Rock of Gibraltar.
On 4 August 1704, Admiral George Rooke led an Anglo-Dutch fleet to capture Gibraltar during the War of the Spanish Succession.
This pivotal event initiated British control over Gibraltar, formalised by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, which ceded the territory from Spain to Britain in perpetuity.
In 2024, Gibraltar celebrates 320 years under British sovereignty.
This long history underscores Gibraltar's strategic importance and its evolution into a distinctive community with a unique cultural and national identity. Gibraltar has developed its own system of self-governance, maintaining autonomy in many areas while remaining a British Overseas Territory.
The people of Gibraltar have demonstrated resilience through historical sieges, economic changes, and political challenges, maintaining a strong sense of community and identity. This resilience is a cornerstone of Gibraltar's modern character, blending historical roots with contemporary advancements.
In 2024, Gibraltar stands as a testament to 320 years of strategic significance, cultural diversity, and resilient identity under British sovereignty.
This celebration will also look forward to future opportunities and challenges, reinforcing the unbreakable bond between Gibraltar and the United Kingdom.
This coin card is in a limited edition of 1320.
