In 2023, the United Kingdom Locomotive - "Flying Sctosman is 100 Years old.

A national treasure of engineering and design, it can be seen on tour or at the National Railway Museum in York, conjuring up the "Golden Age of Steam Travel"

In 02/1923, the steam locomotive that became the casFlying Scotsman emerged from the former Great Northern Railway (GNR) Works at Doncaster.

Initially known as No. 1472, this locomotive was the third of the 'A1' class to be built - and the first for the London and Northeastern Railway (LNER).

The 'A1' was an entirely new type of locomotive. Trains of this period had become heavier, following the introduction of more luxurious corridor carriages with toilets and restaurant cars, and required more powerful locomotives.

By 1924, Locomotive 1472 had acquired a new number (4472), smart embellishments to its green livery, the crest of the LNER on the cab side and the name "Flying Scotsman". (The locomotive was named after the express train service that had run on the East coast route between London and Edinburgh since 1862.).

Ever since that point, there has been confusion between the train and the locomotive.

Over a 40-year career on British rails, "Flying Scotsman" travelled over two million miles (3.2 million km) and became the first steam locomotive to reach a speed of 100mph (161kmh).

In 1928, it hauled the first regular non-stop service from London to Edinburgh.

In 2004, it joined the collection of the National Railway Museum.

A subsequent rebuild took over ten years, and after the triumphant unveiling in 02/2016, the locomotive was once again able to haul excursions, watched by thousands from the lineside.

For a century, and through many iterations, "Flying Scotsman" has well earned its reputation as the most famous steam locomotive in the world.

The Stamps and Coin Combo:

The eight Stamps and a 2 Pounds Coin Combo shows the set of stamps affixed at the top.

The Reverse of the two Pound Coin is seen at left bottom.

The Stamps are titled - "Centenary of the Flying Scotsman" abd depict the Flying Scotsman plying on its route through the countryside, The first stamp shows the front of the iconic steam engine - "THE FLYING SCOTSMAN -60103".

The Reverse of the 2 Pounds Coin is titled - "FLYING SCOTSMAN LNER 4472" in the centre and shows the iconic engine plying on its route. The centenary years - "1923-2023" are inscribed at the bottom periphery.

Only 10,000 Coin Covers containing this Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) Coin variant have been issued. The Serial number of this Cover is "00287" indicating that this is one of the early issues.

The Back of the Special Stamps and Coin Combo gives the addresses of the Royal Mail and Royal Mint Head Offices.

The Obverse of the 2 Pound Coin is also seen on the Back - it shows a left facing effigy of King Charles III, with the peripheral inscriptions reading - "CHARLES III. D.G. REX. F.D. 2 POUNDS. 2023" (meaning "Charles III. By the Grace of God King. Defender of the Faith.").

The Information Brochure (IB) is titled "FLYING SCOTSMAN".

The description reads

"LNER - 4 - 6 - 2 THREE CYLINDER EXPRESS PASSENGER ENGINE.  WHEELS 6' - 8' DIA' (2), CYLINDERS 20' X 26'.

When Flying Scotsman still unnamed, entered service with the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in January 1023, it was one of the three most capable passenger locomotives in Britain.

The third to be built of the new 'AI' Class, at over 70 ft (21m) in length and weighing more than 91 tons (92 tonnes), it was a giant, and the design set a template for the future.

Nigel Gresley's innovative locomotive was powerful, fast and blessed with the ability to sustain high levels of power - a combination that would ensure Flyng Scotsman and its classmates lasted almost until the end of the Steam Age.

The key to this combination was a long and wider boiler with huge heating surfaces allied to a wide firebox over 41 sq ft (3.8 sq m) in size.

As the boiler was able to hold large amounts of water and the firebox was easily capable of generating enough steam from it, Flying Scotsman was not only powerful but also able to deliver that power all day long.

The 6ft 8in (2m) diameter driving wheels, which delivered this power to the rails, meanwhile, gave the potential for speeds far beyond the 75mph (120kmh) or so needed to run passenger services.

On 01 May 1928, Flying Scotsman demonstrated its endurance by setting a new record when it ran non-stop on the 393 miles (632km) from London to Edinburgh, changing crews on the move through a new corridor tender.

The engine's speed potential was proved in spectacular style on 30 November 1934, when it became the first steam locomotive anywhere in the world to verifiably top the 100mph (161kmh) mark.

Upgraded in 1947 with a more powerful boiler and cylinders, Flying Scotsman received further upgrades in 1959, which meant it could match the first express diesels to run on the East Coast Main Line.

Saved from scrap in 1963, the iconic locomotive has since travelled the world and enthralled millions.

An amalgamation of engineering excellence, power, speed and beauty, Flying Scotsman is the crowning glory of the Steam Age - and of ingenuity, craftsmanship and brilliance."
