Himvad Gopalaswamy Betta (Hill):
Himvad Gopalaswamy Betta, is a hill ("betta" in Kannada) located in the Gundlupete Taluk, Chamarajanagar district of the State of Karnataka, India at a height of 1450.00 metres (4770 feet) above sea-level, located in picturesque surroundings and is extensively wooded.
It is situated about 16 km south-west of Gundlupet and approximately 220 km from Bangalore & 75 km from Mysore on the Mysore Ooty Road about 10 km away from Gundlupete, which is 60 km away from Mysore.
It is also the highest peak in the Bandipur National Park. It lies in the core area of the Bandipur National Park and is frequented by wildlife including elephants.
Dense fog predominates and covers the hills round the year, hence the name "Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta" ("Himavad" means "covered in mist" in Kannada). It is a temple of "Venugopalaswamy" ("Krishna") which gives it the full name of "Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta".
It has been also referred to as "Dakshina Govardhanagiri".
There is an old fort on the hill said to have been constructed during the 13th century.
Inside the fort is the Gopalaswamy Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna.
The gopuram of the temple is single-tiered and rests on the compound wall of the enclosure. The parapet wall of the facade of the "mukha mantapa" contains the sculpture of "Dashavatara" (the ten incarnations/avatars of the Lord Vishnu).
The garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) contains an idol of Lord Krishna playing the flute under a tree. The idol of Lord Krishna is beautifully sculpted with the left toe resting on the right one.
A Special Cover (SC) issued by Karnataka Postal Circle of India Post:
At top right is affixed a postage stamp of 500 Paise (Rs.5/-) depicting the Sri Mariamman Temple" from the set of stamps issued during the - "ASEAN-INDIA COMMEMORATIVE SUMMIT - 2018" issued in 2018 by India Post.
