I was posted in Kanpur as a Branch Manager of Jajmau, (Kanpur) during my career with the State Bank of India. 

We lived in a locality called Azad Nagar named after Chandra Shekhar Azad, the great Indian Freedom Fighter. We used to go to the Chandrashekhar Azad University for our morning walks, where I met an old Pujari (Panditji/priest) of the Hanuman Temple, who I believe had a connection with me over several lifetimes. A Philatelic Exhibition titled KANPEX - 2021 held at Kanpur Head Office, Uttar Pradesh:

In the ongoing celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of India's Independence from the British Raj, a Philatelic Exhibition titled - KANPEX was organised at Kanpur Head Office from 16th to 17th December 2021.

During the exhibition Special Covers were brought out on four great Freedom fighters associated with Kanpur - Tatya Tope, Chandrashekhar Azad, Nana Sahib Dhondu Pant Peshwa and one on Mahatma Gandh who visited Kanpur and inspired the Quit India Movement.

I will be putting up posts on three Special Covers on this blog. There are already several posts on Mahatma Gandhi's contribution to the Freedom Fight on this blog.

About Chandrasekhar Azad (1906-1931):

Chandra Shekhar Tiwari (who was popularly known as Chandrashekhar Azad) was an Indian Freedom fighter.

Chandrashekhar Azad was born on 23.07.1906 at present-day Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh. 

He received his early education at Bhavra. Later he went to Kashi Vidyapeeth, Banaras for higher education.

At a young age, Chandrasekhar Azad became involved in India's Freedom Movement activities. 

In 1921 he joined the non-cooperation movement started by Mahatma Gandhi to protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

He was imprisoned for the first time when he was captured by Britishers at the age of 15 and sentenced to 15 lashes.

Following this incident, he took the surname Azad and became known as Chandrashekhar Azad.

Azad and Bhagat Singh:

The Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) was created by Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee, Bismil, Sachindra Nath Bakshi, Sachindra Nath Sanyal in 1923. 

After the Kakori Train Robbery in 1925, the British Raj attempted to suppress the Freedom Fighters. Ashfaqulla Khan, Prasad, Rajendra Nath Lahiri, and Thakur Roshan Singh were sentenced to death for their participation in their patriotic activities.

Murari Lal Gupta, Chakravarthy, Azad and Keshab evaded capture. 

After the deaths of the founder of Hindustan Republican Association (HRA), Ram Prasad Bismil, and three other prominent party leaders, Roshan Singh, Rajendra Nath Lahiri, and Ashfaqulla Khan - Chandrashekhar Azad along with Bhagat Singh and other Freedom Fighters secretly restructured the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) in 1928 and renamed it the "Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) in order to achieve their primary goal of an independent India based on the idea of socialism.

When signing pamphlets as the commander in chief of the HSRA, he often used the alias "Balraj"

The Freedom Fight activities of Azad are described by Manmath Nath Gupta, a member of HSRA in his multiple writings. 

Gupta has also dedicated a section in his book “History of the Indian Revolutionary Movement” to describe the works of Azad. He named this section “Chandrashekhar Azad”. 

Chandrashekhar Azad's last stand:

Chandrashekhar Azad and Sukhdev Raj both Freedom Fighters were betrayed by Veerbhadra Tiwari, their old companion who later turned traitor told them police of his presence in the park.

As a result, Chandrashekhar Azad and Sukhdev Raj found themselves surrounded by the British Raj police. 

In the course of defending himself, Chandrashekhar Azad was wounded, while Sukhdev Raj killed three police officers and injured several others. Sukhdev Raj was able to flee as a result of his action.

 Finding no way out after the ammunition ran out, Chandra Shekhar Azad shot himself with his last bullet.

He was martyred on 27.02.1931 at Alfred Park which is now famously known as Azad Park in Allahabad.

A Special Cover (SC) issued by the Uttar Pradesh Postal Circle of India Post:

The Front of the Special Cover (SC) is titled - "CHANDRA SHEKHAR AZAD - India's Freedom Struggle & Contribution of Uttar Pradesh" (in both Hindi and English) at top left.

Below the title is a portrait of Chandra Shekhar Azad in an oval frame.

At top right is affixed a postage stamp of 500 Paise (Rs.5/-) depicting the "Mahadevappa Mailara" the legendary Freedom Fighter of Karnataka issued in 2018 by India Post.

The special cancellation postmark/handstamp is marked - "CHANDRA SHEKHAR AZAD" (in both Hindi & English) The Special Cancellation is of Kanpur Post Office and the date of cancellation is - "16.12.2021".

The Back of the Special Cover (SC) gives a brief description, (in both Hindi and English) as under:

"Chandra Shekhar Azad was a brave Freedom Fighter. He was born on July 23, 1906 in BHavra village. His father's name was Pandit Sitaram Tiwari and his mother's name was Jagrani Devi.

He received his early education in Bhavra. The young Chandrashekhar was fascinated by the Non-cooperation Movement (1920-21) under Mahatma Gandhi's leadership.

He took active part under the leadership of Ram Prasad Bismil in the Freedom struggle of India. He was involved in the Kakori and the Delhi and Lahore incidents.

On 27.02.1931, he was surrounded by a police party at Alfred Park, Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. Azad was seriously injured amidst gunfire. When there was only one bullet left in his pistol, he chose to end his life at his own hand rather than surrender to the police, living up to his ideal that he lived free and died free, thus justifying his name "Azad".
