On The Wheels:

For the past six years, the Coin Series titled "On Wheels" has been presenting various domestic means of transport of the 20th century.

Motorcycles belong to the most popular machines appearing on the Czech Mint's Silver Coins.

Therefore, the Czech Mint decided to dedicate a set of quarter-ounce gold coins to the JAWA brand.

The engineering company of engineer František Janeček originally dealt with arms production.

However, there were many similar armament factories in Czechoslovakia and the peace between the two World Wars caused a sharp drop in demand.

Janeček's company therefore had to take a new direction and embarked on the production of motorcycles.

He bought a licence from the German company Wanderer and the legendary JAWA brand was created by combining the both names.

The fate of the red Czechoslovak motorcycles was turbulent - one moment they were popular only to fight for their place in the sun the next.

However, JAWA survived the pitfalls of World War II, communist central planning and cheap Asian competition, and today is our oldest motorcycle manufacturing company.

Since 1929, it has created a number of adored machines, some of which are commemorated by four gold coins:

The four Coins placed together

JAWA 250 Type 11 (1946): The "Pérák" was the first domestic mass-produced motorcycle with rear-wheel suspension. It was secretly developed during the Protectorate and it conquered the whole world after the end of the Second World War- it was exported to 112 countries on five continents.

JAWA 500 OHC: The last mass-produced machine of the brand with a four-stroke engine of its own design was the company's flagship. Today, the "OHC" is one of our most sought-after and valuable motorcycles. Often considered the best.

JAWA 350/354 sidecarMotorcycles with the nickname "Kývačka" became famous all over the world thanks to their simple two-stroke engine and high utility value. Many of them are still in use after more than half a century and some boast stylish sidecars.

The JAWA 50/550: A simple and affordable means of transport for the general public has won the hearts of generations of motorists. In addition to its official name, the "Pioneer" was nicknamed "Stump", due to its characteristically shaped seat.

The Obverses of the 10 Dollar Gold Coins of the individual coins are dominated by depictions of iconic motorcycles, with each machine supplemented with a thematic detail - Perák's wheel, OHC's worm gear, Kývačka's tachometer and Pařeza's rosette.

As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the Obverse bears its necessary elements - the national emblem of Niue Island, the nominal value of "10 DOLLARS (NZD)" and the year of issue "2024".

All this is the work of medal maker and motorcycle enthusiast MgA. Martin Dašek.
