After 1680, conflicts with the powerful Mohawks to the west, many Mohicans were driven across the present-day Massachusetts western border.
Writer James Fenimore Cooper provided everlasting fame to the tribe through his 1826 novel "The Last of the Mohicans", which painted a romanticised image of the Mohicans with his portrayal of "Chingachgook" and "Uncas", the book’s titular characters.

Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes.
To honour these tribes, the Torrance, California-based Native American Mint struck a series of Indian Sovereign Nations coins that are authorised by each tribe.
