1477)  150th Anniversary of the Swiss Fire Brigade Association, Switzerland: A 20 Swiss Franc Silver Coin issued by the Swiss Federal Mint, commemorates the milestone: Date of Coin issue: 03.09.2020:

The Swiss Federal Mint has issued on 03.09.2020, 20 Swiss Franc Commemorative Silver Coins which celebrate the 150th Anniversary milestone of the Swiss National Fire Brigade Association (or "Schweizeriische Feuerwehrverband" (SFV), which represents the interests of fire-fighters in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. The Association includes professionals or members of the militia.

The Fire Brigades in Switzerland are ready day and night to assist their fellow citizens in danger. The Brigade includes over 85,000 fire-fighters prepared to save, help and protect around the clock.

The founding idea was first proposed in Herisau in the canton of Appenzell, Ausserhoden, in 1869.

In 1870, the Association, then still a club, was formally founded in Aarau. The promotion of the interests of the fire-fighters and the transfer of knowledge are still important goals of the Association today.

Presently, the SFV is also a modern and innovative service company and works performance and success oriented.

It supports the cantonal associations, connects the language regions of Switzerland and is politically neutral.

The Association is ultimately the link to the National partners in Civil Protection and is internationally active. The SFV does far more than just function as a representative of the interests of the fire-fighters. They aim to help shape the concept of and the training of new would-be fire-fighters. By this important contribution, they guarantee the nation-wide transfer of workable practices and knowledge.

Together, with all of these activities, the SFV aims to support all the country's Fire Brigades in creating the best possible framework conditions and to help motivate young professionals to also join the Fire Brigade.

Nevertheless, even with the concerted efforts  of the SFV, recruiting is becoming more and more difficult because fewer and fewer people are available for militia and volunteer work. This is especially true if such activities are associated with important responsibilities and little compensation. Militia and voluntary work often form the basis of any countries' direct democracy.

The Commemorative Coin:

The Reverse of the 20 Swiss Franc Silver Coin (designed by Benjamin Lobbert) depicts the essence of the primary function of the fire-fighter - the saving of lives in an emergency.

In this design, a small child is being carried out of a building by two fire-fighters on a ladder.

Towards the centre right periphery is the SFV's familiar logo and the numeral "150" along with the  words - "JAHRE ANS ANNI" arranged in three lines, along with the numeral (together meaning "150th Years Anniversary of the SFV/FSSP/FSP"). The years - "1870" and "2020" denote the 150th Anniversary milestone.

The Obverse of the 20 Swiss Franc Silver Coin depicts the name of the issuing country/authority "CONFEDERATIO HELVETICA" (meaning the "Hellenic Confederation") and the Year of issue "2020". The denomination of the coin "20 FR" is at lower bottom, together with the Berne Mint mint-mark - "B".

The specifications of the Commemorative Silver Coin are:

Denomination: 20 Swiss Francs; Metal Composition: .835 Fineness Silver (Ag); Weight: 20.0 grams; Diameter/Size: 33.0 mm; Coin Quality: Proof (P) and Brilliant Uncirculated (BU); Maximum Mintage: 19,000 (BU) and 4,750 (P) pieces; Designer: Benjamin Lobbert; Mint: Bern Mint; Year/Date of Coin issue: 03.09.2020; Selling period: up to 02.09.2023 or while stocks last; Certificate of Authenticity (COA): Yes.
