On 03.09.2020, Swissmint, Switzerland has issued a 20 Franc Silver Coin commemorating the opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel, which also recognises the  achievements in the New Alpine Transversal (NEAT) work in the country.

The Header/Banner shows the Obverse and Reverse of the 20 Francs Silver Coin placed against a background image of the Ceneri Base Tunnel

The Ceneri Base Tunnel:

The Ceneri Base Tunnel is 15.4 kilometres long and is the third largest construction project of the New Alpine Transversal (NEAT) after the Lotschberg and Gotthard Base Tunnels.

The portals are in the North in Camorino near Bellinzona and in the South in Vezia near Lugano.

Like the Gotthard Base Tunnel, it consists of two single-track tubes that are around 40.0 metres apart and are connected to each other every 325 metres by 48 crosscuts.

The subterranean branch of Sare was built 2-1/2 kilometres before the South portal in Vezia, which allows for a future continuation of the tunnel to the South. The start of construction on this continuation is scheduled for after 2030.

To connect the Ceneri Base Tunnel to the existing Railway Line, various structures were built at the Camorino node on the North portal.

The "Bretella" was made on the orders of the Canton of Ticino. A new direct rail connection between Locarno and Lugano, enables a quantum leap in public transport and brings with it significantly shorter travel time. The actual construction costs were around 3.6 billion Swiss Francs.

The Ceneri Base Tunnel has a daily capacity of 170 freight trains and 180 passenger trains, with the latter reaching a tunnel speed of 200 Kilometes per hour (km/h).

After a construction of about 12 years, the Ceneri Base Tunnel will become operational in December 2020.
