1556) "Basel Dove" (or the "Basler Dybli") Stamp, Switzerland: 175th Anniversary of the Basel Dove Postage stamp celebrated on Stamp Day - 2020: Date of Stamp issue: 05.11.2020:

After the issue of the Penny Black in the UK, the stamps of the Cantons of Geneva and Zurich and three stamps in Brazil, Basel was the fifth issuer of postage stamps.

In 1845, the architect Melchoir Berri was commissioned by Johannes Bernoulli, the Head of the Postal Organisation in Basel, Switzerland, to design a postage stamp known as the "Franco-Zettelchen".

He opted for the same motif for his stamp that he had used three years earlier for the design of the Basel letter boxes - a white dove with a letter post in its beak. The "Basel Dove" stamp (or the "Basler Dybli") as it is widely known all over the world, printed in Frankfurt is not only one of the most extraordinary stamps in the world, it is also one of the most beautiful.

The "Basel Dove" had several special features -

- to protect it against forgery, the dove was produced using relief printing.

- it was the world's first multi-coloured stamp.

Things initially did not go as per plan, as the background was green in the first issue, which was not liked by the Postal Commissioner.

On a second attempt, the stamp received its blue background. The green variant is extremely valuable today, even though it never entered circulation.

The First Day Cover (FDC) has an image of Melchoir Berri at left with inscription "TAG DER BRIEFMARKE 2020 BASEL. 175 JAHRE BASLER TAUBE" (meaning "175 years of the Basler Dove").

At top right is affixed the postage stamp issued bearing the special cancellation Handstamp/Postmark. The Cancellation is of Basel Post Office and is dated - "05.11.2020".
