This is one of the Celebratory Coins of the Numismatic Collection 2021, issued by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and minted by the State Mint. 

The collection consists of 15 subjects inspired by history, art, sport, science, nature and Italian food and wine excellences

The themes, sketches and artistic techniques of the 2021 Collection have been chosen, as every year, by a Commission composed of representatives of the Ministry, the Mint and Masters of Art.

The Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato (IPZS) has released new  5 Euro Cupro-nickel Coins on the theme "Sicilian Passito and Cannolo: Italian Food and Wine Culture Coin Series":

The Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance has issued, as part of the 2021 Numismatic Collection minted by the Italian State Mint, a Cupro-nickel Coin  on the  theme "Sicilian Passito and Cannolo: Italian Food and Wine Culture Coin Series":

Sicilian Passito (or "Straw Wine")

"Liastos" is Greek for "sun-dried" and is the word used to describe Passito or straw wine. Greece and Cyprus are the original home of the style and quite a few Liastos wines are produced here.

Straw wine, or raisin wine, is a wine made from grapes that have been dried to concentrate their juice. The result is similar to that of the ice wine process, but is a much older process and suitable for warm climates. 

The technique dates back to pre-Classical times with wines becoming fashionable in Roman times and in late Medieval/Renaissance Europe when wines such as Malmsey ('Malvasia' originally from Greece) and 'Candia' (from Crete) were highly sought after. 

Traditionally, most production of these wines has been in Greece, the islands off Sicily, Cyprus, Northern Italy and the French Alps. However producers in other areas are now using with the method too.

Straw wines are typically sweet to very sweet white wines, similar in density and sweetness to Sauternes but potentially sweeter. They are capable of long ageing. The low yields and labour-intensive production method means that they are quite expensive. Around Verona red grapes are dried, and are fermented in two different ways to make a strong dry red wine (Amarone) and a sweet red wine (Recioto della Valpolicella).

Cannoli:

These are Italian pastries consisting of tube-shaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling usually containing ricotta—a staple of Sicilian cuisine. They range in size from 9 centimetres (3.5 in) to 20 centimetres (7.9 in). In mainland Italy, they are commonly known as "cannoli siciliani" ("Sicilian cannoli").

The Commemorative Coin 5 Euro Cupro-nickel Coin):

On the Reverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel Coin is depicted a composition of representative elements of Sicily - the "Temple of Concordia of the Valley of the Temples" in Agrigento, the stylized "Ancient Theater of Taormina", an almond branch, a sea wave and the "Triskeles", a female head with three bent legs, also called "Trinacria", the symbol of Sicily and an integral part of the Sicilian flag. 

Above, around, the inscription - "SAPORI D'ITALIA" and the value "5 EURO"; on the left is inscribed, "R", (mint mark of the Mint of Rome).

At the bottom is the year of issue - "2021".

On the Obverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel Coin are depicted two 'Sicilian cannoli' and a glass of 'Passito' in the foreground on a typical decoration of Caltagirone ceramics and a Baroque spiral column with Corinthian capital inspired by the interior of the Mother Church of Palazzolo Acreide. 

In the arched composition, are the inscriptions “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA” and “SICILIA”, separated by a stylized sea wave; below, on the right, is the name of the designer “COLANERI”. The Coin has coloured elements.

Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a branded IPZS case accompanied by a Certificate Of Authenticity (COA)

    1. This is a very popular combination. I have a Valpolicella and a Malvasia wine from Italy. The Valpolicella was the first wine I ever bought. Couldn't bring myself to open it. It evokes a memory.
