2006) "European Year of the Rail", Austria: A Postage Stamp of 2.30 Euro issued by Austrian Post: Date of Stamp issue: 20.08.2021:

About European Year of Rail:

2021 is the European Year of Rail, shining a light on one of the most sustainable, innovative and safest transport modes.

Rail is a sustainable and safe means of transport.

As such, it makes an important contribution to achieving the Green Deal target of making Europe climate-neutral by 2050.

While transport is responsible for 25 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, rail transport accounts for only 0.5 percent.

To highlight the importance of rail transport for climate protection, the European Commission has declared 2021 the "European Year of Rail".

This year, events, projects and initiatives will strengthen rail transport as an innovative and safe mode of transport and make it more attractive. Its importance for European culture and sustainable tourism will also be highlighted.

2021 will also be the first year in which the "4th Railway Package" will be fully implemented. This is an important step towards an efficient, cross-border European rail network.

A variety of activities will put rail in the spotlight throughout 2021 across the European continent, to encourage the use of rail by both people and freight and to contribute to the EU Green Deal goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050.

The Connecting Europe Express will be one of the European Year of Rail’s most emblematic initiatives.

About the Connecting Europe Express:

As part of the European Year of Rail, a special EU train titled the "Connecting Europe Express" will criss-cross the continent from 02.09.2021 to 7.10,2021 stopping in over 100 cities in 26 countries.

Criss-crossing 26 countries, it will trace many of the routes that bind Europe together, connecting countries, businesses and people. It will showcase the unifying force of rail.

Its role is to make one better understand the challenges that European rail has to overcome in order to become the mode of choice for passengers and businesses alike.

Railway companies from different EU Member States are providing rolling stock to configure this train.

The Stamp:

The commemorative stamp with a face value of EUR 2.30 will be issued in an edition of 200,000 stamps in sheets of 50. The Stamp is titled "2021 EUROPAISCHES JAHR DER SCHIENE" (2021, European Year of Rail").

The Stamp shows a section of a rail switch. The blue coloring represents the flag of the EU, whose stars stand out in the lower part of the value.

"From personal experience too I've found rail travel in Europe most comfortable, enjoyable and, convenient, though expensive at times if you book on the spot! One can carry loads of luggage safely and, if you reach the platform with the train about to leave, the train staff/ chaperons help carry and load your lugguage as well! 😀"
