Hatkargha” (Handicrafts):

Madhya Pradesh, also known as the “heart of India”, has a long history of tradition and culture which is reflected in the different works of Arts and Handicrafts, which portray the hereditary skills and craftsmanship of the inhabitants. These artistic works are reflected in woven cotton or silk sarees, fabrics with block prints, stuffed toys, floor coverings, bamboo work, cane work, jute work, woodcraft, iron craft, stone craft, metal craft, terracotta, zari work, durries, folk paintings, ornaments, dolls and papier mache et al.

The artifacts/articles produced have a wide utilitarian range, and a long heritage of tradition continues to add a highly distinctive, individualistic touch to the handicrafts of Madhya Pradesh. Thousands of craftsmen practice hand printing generally with vegetable dyes at several hand printing centres – Bagh, Bhopal, Burhanpur, Bhairongarh or Bherugarh, Gautampura, Jawad, Mandsaur,  Umedpura, Sohawal, Tarapur et al.

Garments, bedspreads, table cloths and curtain material are produced at Umedpura and Tarapur in Nandana prints. From Bhairongarh come printed quilt covers and tablecloths. Tarapur and Mandsaur are major centres for Tie and Dye “chunaries”.

Textile weaving/prints – Chanderi & Maheshwari prints:

The State is famous for its extensive history of textiles. From the 7th Century BC to the 2nd Century BC, age-old scriptures mention Madhya Pradesh as a prominent hub of textile weaving. The most famous textile products in MP include the Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees.  The type of raw materials that are used have undergone changes across the centuries, and the usage of the products manufactured has also seen ups and downs, but an extensive history of textile industries in Madhya Pradesh keeps contributing to its extremely unique handicrafts industry.
Soft and subtle shades in delicate weaves are the speciality of Chanderi sarees (Chanderi is a small town, located in Ashoknagar district of Madhya Pradesh). In this handicraft, silk is used as the warp and cotton for the weft. Some sarees have gold checks, which combined with the traditional rich gold border along with two bands on the “Pallu” give each sari a special design. The incredible craftsmanship of local weavers is reflected in the tiny “zaribootis” which sparkle across each saree.

Today, young educated weavers are getting training of designing prints on computers at an institute set up for the purpose of equipping them with the latest technology to further their trade. These designs are taking over from traditional designs like forts and old monuments. Weavers are also experimenting with new styles of printing like “Batik”, “Kalamkari”, “Bagh”, “Dabu”, “Bagru”, “Chauranga” and block prints etc. which are all in great demand by the consumers.
The Maheshwari craftsmen (from Maheswar, Khargone District, an ancient town on the Banks of the Narmada River) have perfected the art of weaving a wide range/variety of checks. The Maheshwari sarees have a reversible border so they can be worn on both sides. They also have unique “Pallus” with five stripes or bands, two white and three coloured ones alternating. The sarees are usually plain or have stripes or checks in their field, with geometric motifs decorating the borders. The motifs are usually fine abstract representations of local elements like flowers, leaves, local architecture etc. Almost 4000 lustrous threads are used into making a single saree.

Through the centuries, this craft has witnessed several changes. Copper plated nylon has replaced the limited palette of natural colours.

Bagh Prints:
Bagh Print is a traditional hand block print with natural colours, which is a handicraft speciality of Bagh, Dhar District, M.P.

This style of print derives its name from the Bagh village situated on the Bagh River. The Narmada River which flows some 30 km away from Bagh village is an alternate source of water for this hand block print industry, particularly during the summer months when the Bagh River dries up.

Traditionally, this art work was started by a community of Muslim Khatris. They brought this art form from Larkana in Sindh (now in Pakistan, known as “Ajrak” prints in Sindh) to Marwad in Rajasthan and from there to Bagh, bringing with them their traditional printing techniques and block printing processes. In this printing technique, the cloths used are cotton and silk which are made to undergo a treatment of a blend of corroded Iron fillings, Alum and “Alizarin” (root of “Morinda Tinctoria”), a vegetable dyeing process. The weaving and hand block printing processes with geometric designs in red and black natural colours are made by skilled craftsmen/artisans. On completion of the printing process, the printed fabric is repeatedly washed in the flowing waters of the Bagh River, (an essential requirement for this vegetable dyeing based handicraft) and when the Bagh River dries up, the fabric is washed in the Narmada River waters. This repeated washing imparts a fine lustre to the cloth.

Bagh Print fabric with replicated geometric and floral designs coupled with vegetable colours of red and black over a white background is a popular textile printing product.

The materials used for making the printed fabric, range from cotton Maheshwari dress material, silks, chiffon, crepe, etc and constant innovations are being made to keep this art-form alive .

Some of the block designs as they have now evolved draw inspiration from “Nariyal Zaal” and “Ghevar Zaal” based on the paintings and the “Jaali” patterns of the Taj Mahal and Forts, jasmine flowers, mushroom or field patterns and so on. Bed covers, innovative wooden blocks and colours, block printing on bamboo “chiks” or mats, leather, bamboo chicks, cotton rugs, jute et al have been experimented upon successfully by the artisans.

Bhairugarh Prints:
Bherugarh or Bhairavgarh handicrafts comprise several handicrafts – Bherugarh Print, Bandhej, Block Print, Batik Print, Screen Print etc. all art techniques which were perfected through the ages.

Following new discoveries in printing techniques in the decade of the 1980s, these traditional Art forms (of using dye cloth in vegetable dyes, heavily dependent of water) went into a decline because they were unable to compete with machine made products and because of scarcity of water resources.

Concerted efforts were made to revive and promote these printing styles which had been perfected through the Ages through using them on high quality fabrics, by employing innovative & attractive designs and positioning these prints as a linkage to India’s ancient art forms.

The range of products has also been increased to include – Designer cotton bed sheets/spreads, Batik kurtas, lungis, odhanis, floor coverings, multi-colour Batik, wall hangings, designer cushions, block print batik, Batik dress material, ladies dress material et al.

This Art form of handicrafts has now been revived and brought back from near extinction.
