627) Mahabharat: A set of 18 stamps issued by India Post depicting scenes from the great Indian Epic Poem issued on 27.11.2017:
The Mahabharat is an Indian Epic, which is in a world-famous class of its own, vast, immortal, rich, deep, essential, thoughtful, philosophic, pure, intriguing, engaging and yet magnanimous.
There is no human emotion that is left untouched or unspoken, as each character in this colourful, yet tragic Epic Poem is unique in his/her own-self. Each relationship is vividly expressed, yet exists on a complex note.
There is no human emotion that is left untouched or unspoken, as each character in this colourful, yet tragic Epic Poem is unique in his/her own-self. Each relationship is vividly expressed, yet exists on a complex note.
It has been commented by eminent Indian critics that the Epic embodies every relationship, emotion, circumstance which a human being can experience in one's lifetime and it is a great teaching/learning fountain of reference which holds good even present day.
The history of culmination of this historical text, presents to the reader a "conglomeration of ideas" - beginning from the earliest phase of Indian civilisation and includes the Vedic Philosophy, the Post-Vedic, the Upanishadic thoughts upto the Puranic narratives.
All these developments formulating the essence of Indian Philosophy constitute the Bhagwad Gita. It entails Lord Krishna's revelation of his divine nature to Arjun. As a consequence, Arjun is able to decide upon a course of action that was any way rendered inevitable by the complex sequence of events. Lord Krishna counsels Arjun on the mandates of "Dharma" (meaning "righteous way of Living Human Life") and the necessity of action, finally relieving Arjun of his emotional dilemma of combating the "Kauravs" which included his cousins, his teachers and various erst-while friends and relatives in the Epic War, most of whom he had great regard for.
The Mahabharat dramatizes Arjun's worries and emotions and makes him see the fine difference between moral and ritual ethics through the teachings of the Bhagwad Gita.
This blend of the Bhagwad Gita and the Mahabharat is evocative of the interconnectedness within the universal cosmology as both the divine and the human worlds tend to co-interact.
In the Epic, there is violence in both domains, emotional turbulence in the form of conspiracy of Duryodhan (the Kaurav clan leader and eldest brother out of 100 siblings) and his maternal uncle Shakuni, deceit, hatred (for the Pandavs) and victimisation of the righteous Pandavs.
The position of Draupadi within the Epic is a complex one, on the one hand, she suffered relentlessly, while on the other hand, she was a woman with a mind of her own, assertive and unflinching.
The Mahabharat operates on the concept of power, state and kingdomhood which is intricately tied to matters of inheritance and lineage.
As the inevitability of fate determines events, in this duel between Karn and Arjun, Ghatotkach (the son of Bhim - one of the Pandav brothers and Hidimba) falls prey to Karn's attack from the infallible weapon blessed and given to him by the King off the Gods Indra, thereby sacrificing his own life for Arjun, as the weapon was originally procured by Karn to kill Arjun in battle. Ghatotkach was of bold built, exemplifying a "ghatam" (clay pot) and sacrificed his life for his uncle Arjun.
The "Lakshagriha" ("House of Lacquer") episode was the result of Duryodhan's wrath and hatred for the Pandavs. He set an evil trap to burn the Pandav brothers to death, but the Pandavs managed to escape through a secret tunnel, thanks to Vidur's prior warning to Yudhishthir.
The Mahabharat explores the role of cosmology which are best illustrated by the characters of Bhishma and Shikhandi. Their encounter with each other in two different cycles of birth and re-birth was determined and based on the concept of revenge and fate. Having known that Bhism's ethical principles would prevent him from confronting/combating a woman in the battle-field, Arjun uses Shikhandi as a shield to defeat the mighty warrior Bhishm.
Interestingly, the Mahabharat apart from being a "Mahakavya" (Epic Poem) narrating the great war, it is also a "bildungsroman" ("Bildung" meaning "education" and "roman" means " novel" or a "Novel of education, culture, morals etc.") ,a "narrative which traces the development of a protagonist's character from childhood to maturity through varied experiences". As we see in the Epic, the life and times of the Pandavs and Kauravs tell their stories since their childhood to their growth as skilful warriors.
War entails no peace, instead punctures a human being's consciousness to the extent that its destruction of life and property hauntshim throughout.
The Epic as it is marked by its multi-layered characteristics unfolds its events within the paradigm of human fate and destiny, its magnanimity in the course of time has anchored it to eternity.
The relevance of the Mahabharat endures to the present day:
Even in modern times, adaptations of the Mahabharat have taken place in different regional languages.
It has been interpreted and re-interpreted, not only in India but in several nations across the world.
The charm of this Epic has cast a spell across time and space, as different parts of the Indian Sub-continent adopted and adapted the narrative, wholly or in parts, to suil their cultural identities. Almost every State in India has some relics dedicated to an episode from the great Epic. The spatial vastness of this poem, eventually is a spread of civilisation and the related conflicts, manifest today in different architectural, scriptural, folk craft and other forms of expressions.
Mahabharat is an Epic that has permeated life and culture far beyond the Indian sub-continent. In India, facets of the Epic appear in song, dance, film, literature, painting, sculpture and everyday conversation.
