The Royal Dutch Mint has issued Commemorative 5 and 10 Euro coins and a Silver medal in honour of 100 years of Dutch aviation.
KLM ("Koninklijke Luchvaart Maatschappij" or "Royal Airline Company"), NLR (National aerospace Laboratory of the Netherlands, a major Technological Institute) and aircraft manufacturer GKN Fokker are all celebrating 100th Anniversary of their establishment in 2019. In many ways, the three of them narrate the history of Dutch aviation.
Today, aviation has made the globe smaller and broadened mankind's perspectives/horizons. Borders and distances have become smaller, which has enriched people's lives. Human beings have always been obsessed with escaping the Earth and looking at the world from the sky, like birds. Flying is something "magical" and aviation has developed revolutionarily over the past century. What once started as a dream has now become a normal reality accessible to everyone.
The Commemorative Coins:
Three Commemorative Coins are being issued by the Royal Dutch Mint, Netherlands - Gold Proof, Silver Proof and Silver-plated.
This issue is the first time that there will be differences in the coins. When one places the three coins next to one another, one can see the plane and its shadow are moving slightly every/each time. The aircraft seems to be flying in the design.
The three coins placed together show the moving shadows of a flying/moving aircraft
In honour of their respective anniversaries, KLM, NLR and GKN Fokker are organising an event titled "100 years of aviation in the Netherlands" at the Eye Film Museum in Amsterdam on 14.03.2019.
This venue has been chosen, because in 1919, the First Air Traffic Exhibition Amsterdam (ELTA) was organised there. In 1919, the forerunner of the NLR, the "Rijksstudiedienst voor de Luchtvaart" (RSL) was established to increase the safety of military and civil aviation.
