The Royal Mail, U.K.'s six stamps capture beautiful and inspirational views in Forestry Commission and related forests in the four countries of the U.K., capturing the character and varied colours of these public woodlands and the national arboretum.

The Forestry Commission was founded in 09/1919, initially to reforest the UK for timber after World War I had seen tree-felling and clearances of huge areas for the war effort reducing Britain's tree cover to an all-time low of around 5%.  It is the public body responsible for managing and growing public forests and woodland.

The Forestry Commission's support for the creation of productive, state-owned forests to replenish the much-depleted supplies of home-grown timber has yielded impressive results. In the last century, the UK has more than doubled its tree cover to almost 12% of its land area.

Historically, the Forests of Britain are a diverse array of wooded or semi-wooded sites of high ecological, environmental, recreational and economic importance. They have been transformed from the untamed wildwood of prehistoric times by the necessities of the people and the efforts of the rulers. They have been invaluable for providing food, fuel and timber and then predominantly serving as places of recreation and revenue for the Kings.

As well as providing sustainable timber to U.K's. industry, in the last 100 years, the Forestry Commission's focus has grown to embrace other areas. It is active in wildlife conservation especially endangered bird and butterfly species, the preservation of national parks and is proficient in scientific research on pests and diseases, as well as, the response to climate change.

The Forests of Britain are presently viewed as multi-faceted assets, not just for industry, but also for their environmental, ecological and recreational value, as well as, their contribution to landscape character and a great boon as sites for public recreation and enjoyment.

It is also the biggest provider of outdoor recreation in the U.K., as it receives around 600 million visits every year to its forests and woodlands.
