1204) Indian-Pacific Railway Service, Australia: 50th Anniversary of the iconic train service: A Commemorative 50 Cent Coin issued by the Royal Australian Mint (RAM): Year of issue: 2020:

In 1970, the first Sydney for Perth, an epic rail journey passing through Australia's ancient interior. The Commemorative coin celebrates the romance of the transcontinental railway journey from East to West. The service is one of the only genuine coast to coast railway journeys, worldwide.

Observing the 50th Anniversary of the iconic Indian Pacific and following the popular 3801 - "A Legend of Steam" and "The Ghan" coins, the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) has brought out this 2020 Uncirculated Coin.

For my post on this blog, on "The Ghan", please visit the following link:

The Reverse of the partially coloured Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) 50 Cent coin placed against a background image of the train itself as it is seen on the commemorative coin

The service began when the remaining narrow gauge parts of Australia's East-West corridor was gauge converted to Standard Gauge in 1966. At this time, Australia's Department of Railways of New South Wales, South Australian Railways, Commonwealth Railways and Western Australian Government Railways agreed that a through passenger train service from Sydney Central Station on the Pacific coast to the East Perth Terminal on the West Coast on the Indian Ocean coast should become a reality.

On 23.02.1970, the first Indian Pacific train left Sydney, becoming the first direct train to cross the vast Australian continent. The Indian-Pacific named for the two oceans that the train reaches on its journey, travels from Sydney across the Nullarbor, the flat almost treeless arid region of Southern Australia.

The entire journey, which includes the longest straight stretch of railway track in the world - 478 kilometres (or 297.0 miles) stretch across the Nullarbor and it takes a total of four days to cross.

The Indian Pacific is considered one of the greatest railway journeys in the world, whose wedge-tailed eagle logo reflects the unique and ancient landscapes that are crossed by its passengers.

The inaugural journey almost 50 years ago was a significant achievement in Australia, which has now developed into the all-inclusive guest experience today - with regionally inspired food and wine, world-class service and off-train excursions.

The Commemorative Coin:

The Reverse of the partially coloured 50 Cent Coins depict the iconic Australian Indian Pacific train traversing its way over the tracks on the vast journey of the Sydney-Perth crossing. The train shows the distinctive wedge-tailed eagle logo on its front engine.

On the lower right periphery is inscribed the text - "INDIAN PACIFIC 1970 - 2020". The denomination of the coin "50" is seen on the upper periphery.

The Obverse of the partially coloured 50 Cents Coin shows and effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right, which has been designed by Jody Clark, whose initials "JC" appear on the Queen's shoulder.

The peripheral inscriptions are - "ELIZABETH II. AUSTRALIA. 2020".
