The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) releases its Gold and Silver Maple Leaf bullion Coin Series, every year.
The Gold Maple Leaf was first struck in 1979 and is currently one of the leading gold bullion coins in the world. The Silver Maple Leaf followed in 1988.
As an innovator in numismatics, the Royal Canadian Mint puts the best technology has to offer into innovating their traditional coins series as well as generating new releases.
Since 2014, both Gold and Silver Maple Leaf coins have had laser engraved micro-maple leaf additions added on their Reverse.
Radial lines were also added that make the coin series hard to counterfeit, ensuring the authenticity of the actual releases from the Mint.
The Gold Maple Leaf was the first-ever gold bullion coin to achieve this purity level, but not until 1982 when the series transitioned from .999 fine gold to .9999 fine gold. The Royal Canadian Mint even struck special edition Gold Maple Leafs with a record .99999 fine purity.
The Incuse Maple Leaf Coins:
The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has continued with its constant innovation and dynamic presentation of the emblematic Maple Leaf Series.
In 2018, the RCM made history by debuting the first-ever Incuse Maple Leafs, followed up with incuse releases in 2019 and 2020 combined with special effects such as selected gilding and rhodium plating, and now in 2021.
An incuse coin differs radically from a traditional coin. Traditional coins have raised design devices, meaning the details of the design - say the head of a President - will appear on top of the fields of the Coin. The designs on incuse coins are structured differently: the fields are the highest point on the coin, and the devices or design details are struck “incused,” or indented, below the fields.
In 2021, the RCM is taking it to the next level with the debut of the first-ever Super Incuse Maple Leaf coins, made possible through state-of-the-art minting technology - a fitting tribute for the 25th Anniversary of the Maple Tree being designated as Canada's arboreal emblem.
The first ever Super Incuse strike in the world is seen on the 2021 Maple Leaf Silver Bullion Coins:
In addition to its traditional Maple Leaf design, this coin features the world’s first “Super Incuse” design — a design that is five times deeper strike than regular incuse Maple Leaf coins.
The Super Incuse Minting technology used on these Coins makes the incuse strike sink 1.5 mm into the coin's surface, five times deeper than the strike on previous Incuse Maples.
This results in a steep, canyon-like difference in depth that offers a stunning contrast with the field of the coin. This strike is so deep that the strike nearly touches the center of the coin, just short of 40% of the coin's total thickness.
The RCM has achieved this much incuse depth without any ghosting on the Obverse (e.g., a shadow of the leaf around the effigy).
The RCM has achieved the flawless impression with just three strikes, even though it is significantly deeper than standard incuse.
The Mint’s skilled artisans have taken incuse technology to another level with this world’s first “Super Incuse” Reverse design that features a five times deeper strike than on the original incuse maples, a strike that nearly reaches the center of the Coin.
