About the 75th Anniversary Of The Giants Of The City Of Ontinyent Spain:

Twice a year, on the occasion of the Corpus Christi and La Purísima festivities, the Giants and Bigheads of Ontinyent go out to dance on the eve of the festivities and also during the processions.

The Giants represent the three cultures that coexisted in the town during medieval times: Arab, Jewish and Christian.

These figures are usually about 4 meters tall and can weigh 50 kilos. Its interior is designed with an aluminum structure in which the people who are going to dress it during the parades are placed.

Los Cabezudos are nine figures that represent popular characters, smaller and lighter than the Giants, but who create the same expectation every year.

Since 1982 the Cabezudos de Ontinyent dance "El baile de los Cabets", with tabal and dulzaina music is arranged by Enric Gironés.

In 1946, by popular request, artists such as Carlos Tormo and Manuel Martínez Oviedo built new Gigantes y Cabezudos made of wicker and beech wood.

Following the old tradition that somehow arose in the mid-nineteenth century, four Giants, Isabel and Fernando (the King and the Queen) and L'Agüelo and L'Agüela (the Moorish King and the Mora Queen), danced to the rhythm of the drums. Later two new characters were added representing the Jewish culture.

The current figures were made in 1992 by an artist from Alicante, Jordi Arrue Ferry, based on the previous ones. They are made of fibreglass and polyester, materials much more resistant and that, with the passage of time, use and the different transfers, do not deteriorate the suits.
