About Experience Nature - Dwingelderveld National Park:
Dwingelderveld National Park is the largest wet heathland in western Europe. This protected Nature Reserve (Natura 2000) is home to many rare plants and animals.
In September 2020, Dwingelderveld was selected as the ‘quietest area in the Netherlands’ by the Dutch Foundation for Noise Pollution (Nederlandse Stichting Geluidshinder, NSG).
From a geological point of view, Dwingelderveld is special because of its boulder clay layer. This layer originated during the penultimate ice age, 150,000 years ago. The boulder clay layer prevents rainwater from sinking directly into the ground.
Partly as a result of this, special conditions have been created that allow rare and endangered flora and fauna to establish themselves and survive in this area.
One of those conditions is the presence of a water system of its own in the area. Human intervention in the area has been limited, resulting in the preservation of the area’s moist, nutrient-poor nature.
The vast, moist heathland of Dwingelderveld is made up of wet grabens alternating with dry sand ridges. This has created a lot of variation in plant growth and animal life. Heath, cotton grass and marsh gentian grow in the wettest parts, while heather and mouse-ear hawkweed can be found in the dry areas.
The Stamps:
Two First Day Covers (FDCs) have been issued. Each one has five stamp variants affixed thereon.
At left is seen a hiker standing on a grassy patch on the slopes of a mountain.
The special Cancellation Handstamp bears an image of a plant in the centre. The Cancellation is dated - "04.01.2021".
The Experience Nature - Dwingelderveld stamps feature the following residents of this Nature Reserve:
Drenthe Heath Sheep, Sand Lizard, Beewolf, Scots Pine, Grass Snake, Yellowhammer, Slow Worm, Crane, Peat Moss and Roe Deer.
Transparent images of a Kestrel with spread wings, Scots Pine needles, a crawling Dung Beetle, the profile of the head of a Drenthe Heath Sheep and a bare English Oak all feature in a separate graphic layer on the stamp sheet.
The Experience Nature - Dwingelderveld stamp sheet was designed by graphic designer Frank Janse from Gouda.
On the Miniature Sheet (MS), the ten plants and animals are depicted in their natural environment on their own stamp.
In some cases, the image or the background colour continues onto the adjacent stamp and onto the sheet edge. Due to the landscape character of the photographs, a landscape stamp format was selected for this new issue.
In previous years, the Experience nature sheets have always been in portrait orientation. All photos are incorporated in a graphic layer of different sized overlapping circles, which break through the boundaries of the perforations. The circle pattern returns as small droplets on the sheet edge and the tabs.
There is another graphic layer on top of the circles, made up of transparent images of a bird of prey, a beetle, a tree, pine needles and a sheep’s head. The monochrome images are almost abstract and connect the stamps.
Two Presentation Packs have been released, each containing Five of the Stamp Variants.
