1412) "International LGBTQ Pride Day", Spain: The LGBTQ Pride Day Flag (Rainbow Flag) depicted on the first ever stamp issued : Date of Stamp issued: 15.06.2020:
For the first time ever, a postage stamp featuring the LGTBQ Pride Day Flag has been issued.
The famous Rainbow Flag originated in San Francisco. It was designed by Gilbert Baker, an artist and gar rights activist at the end of the 1970s.
The original design had eight colours - pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue and purple.
There are various interpretations about the meaning of the colours in the flag. Some people associate each one with a sexual orientation, but Baker thought otherwise. He gave the following interprwtations to the eight colours:
pink - sexuality
red - life
orange - health
yellow - sunlight
green - nature
turquoise - magic and art
blue - serenity
purple - spirit
In Spain, during the 1960s and beginning of the 1970s, the Pasaje Begona in Torremolinos, without intending to, became the cradle of LGBTQ community's rights and freedoms.
The attraction of Torremolinos was not just its beaches and the glamour of its hotels, parties and nightclubs, but also its atmosphere of freedom, diversity and the avante garde (meaning "advance guard"). In particular, Pasaje Begona evolved into an absolute landmark of freedom and respect for diversity. In this way, the LGBTQ community began, little by little, to gain rights.
On 24.06.1971, a huge police raid on Pasaje Begona involved a turning point for the movement. There were astronomical fines, arrests, premises were closed and the tourists who were there were even deported to their countries of origin.
Having been declared the "Birthplace of Rights anf Freedoms" by the Andalusian Parliament d by theLower House of arliament, the enclave is being restored and promoted as a historical memory site and as a tourist and cultural attraction for Torremolinos, Andalusia and Spain.

ReplyDelete"Interesting ! I remember, when I visited Toronto (Canada) first time in first week of July 2010, I saw a huge procession with 'floats' on account of 'Canada Day' on 1st July, being celebrated with grandure. In this five hour long colourful procession, there were 4-5 different LGBT people's floats. And they were flying the flag described by you in your above post on each decorated truck. Even some were participating 'naked' ! I was astonished to see all this fri the entrance of my hostel where I was put up alongwith my daughter Aparna & her hubby Mr.Phillip.
Very interesting experience, Rambhau. Thanks for sharing.
