1561) America's Small-Size Silver Certificate, USA: The "Funny Story": It could be exchanged for a Morgan or a Peace Dollar at par:
Prior to 1928, the United States issued large-sized $1 Silver Certificates.
However, in the year before the "Great Depression" struck, the US Treasury Department decided that it could cut costs and speed up transactions by reducing the size of its currency.
This was one of such Notes, which at first glance looks rather familiar. But a glance below the portrait of George Washington reveals that the Note bears the words "ONE SILVER DOLLAR". This is because this Note were one dollar legal tender and could be traded in for a Morgan or Peace Silver Dollar.
This first year small-sized Silver Certificate also has an interesting nickname - the "Funnyback" Note, because the light green border and large, green ornamental "ONE" on the Back does not match the contemporary black-and-white face.
In fact, the Back looked almost like children's play money.
Interestingly, the Note was issued for less than a year - from 04/1928 to 01/1029.
These Notes have now become increasingly scarce today and hold a special place in the annals of American history.

The Front of the $1 (One Dollar) Silver Certificate bears the inscription - "ONE SILVER DOLLAR" - below George Washington's image.

ReplyDelete"Interesting piece of information, as always. Do you have a blog on Morgan and Peace dollars too. These are something akin to our Victoria silver coins."
