The Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre FNMT — Real Casa de la Moneda has issued 10 Euro (or 8 Reale) collector coins on Salvador Dali - one of the country’s more celebrated artists of the 20th Century.

About Salvador Dali:

Salvador Dali (1904–1989) was renowned internationally for both his surrealistic style of painting as well as his signature moustache.

Dali cultivated his unique look, which included an impeccably waxed moustache, which he styled into two thin, upward-pointing curves that became his trademark.

In terms of his approach to art and from a very young age, Dalí found much inspiration in the surrounding Catalan environs of his childhood and many of its landscapes would become recurring motifs in his later key paintings.

Dali’s early creative motives were that he wanted to revolutionise the art of the 20th Century and the Surrealists saw in Dali the future of the movement, believing he was well-placed with an exceptionally rich imagination.

The outbreak of World War II found Salvador Dali and his wife in France. Following the German invasion, they were able to escape only because they were issued visas by Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the celebrated Portuguese diplomat. They crossed into Portugal and subsequently sailed from Lisbon to New York in August 1940, where the couple would live for eight years.

In 1982, and as recognition of his contribution to the art world, King Juan Carlos bestowed the title Marqués de Dalí de Púbol, which included the city where Dali lived at the time. Initially hereditary, it was changed to life-only in 1983, as Dali had no children.

On the 23.01.1989, he passed away of heart failure at the age of 84 and was buried in the crypt below the stage of his Theatre-Museum in Figueres.

Two major museums are devoted to Dalí’s work and include the "Dalí Theatre-Museum" in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain, and the "Salvador Dalí Museum" in St. Petersburg, Florida, U.S.

The Coin:

The Coin replicates in vivid colour one of Dali’s paintings titled "Galatea of the Spheres," created in 1952, and presently part of the "Teatro-Museo Dalí," Figueres.

On the Reverse of the 10 Euro Silver Coin is depicted Gala Dalí, (the artist’s wife and muse), the pattern is made of elements of a greater image pieced together through a series of spheres arranged in a continuous array. The work shows a bust of Gala made up of a matrix of spheres seemingly suspended in space.

The Coins’ denomination of "10 EURO is placed to the right and the Real Casa’s mintmark, a "crowned M", is placed under the denomination.

Surrounding the primary design is a border of ants. To Dali, ants were symbolic of mortality, decay, and impermanence and were a component he repeatedly used in his artwork

On the Obverse of the 10 Euro Silver Coin is included an image of the artist based on a photograph taken by the photographer Melitó Casals.

In the background is a pattern on the field of one of Dali’s better-known works titled - "The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory".

An actual re-creation of one of Dali’s earlier works painted in 1931 known as "The Persistence of Memory", his later interpretation was painted in 1954 and is part of the Salvador Dalí Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida.

A facsimile of his signature is placed to the right of his portrait and the text "ESPANA 2021" is seen just below his signature.

The primary design is also surrounded by a border in the form of ants in procession.
