1401) Ancient Postal Routes, Vatican City State: EUROPA 2020 theme: Two stamps of 1.10 Euro and 1.15 Euro issued by the "Ufficio filatelico e Numismatico - Governatorato,  Vaticano" featuring ancient postal routes emanating from the Vatican City State during the 6th &11th Centuries AD:

The theme for the "EUROPA 2020" common Stamps for all PostEurop affiliated Postal Administrations and Enterprises is "Ancient Postal Routes".

The Stamps of the Vatican City State for the Europa 2020 theme draw from this year's theme "Ancient Postal Routes" and feature two "illustrations" of the 6th Century "Corpus Agrimensorum Romanorum" contained in the Pal. lat. 1564, a manuscript of the 9th Century of the Vatican library, which served as a model for the "Tabula peutingeriana" - an 11th Century road map, which indicated in red the "cursus publicus" - the ancient Postal System of the Romans.

The first stamp of 1.15 Euro features an illustration of the "Colonia Axernias" (Terricina), with a section of the Via Appia.

The second Stamp of 1.10 Euro, reproduces the illustration of the "Colonia lulia" (Torino), with the intersection of its main roads and shows an illustration of the "Cardo Massimo" (North-south direction) with the "Decumano Massimo" (East-west direction), which extended outside the walls uniting the city top its four cardinal points.

A Cardo is the Main Street in the heart of the City and Trade Centre. For more interesting information on the Cardo, please visit my post on this blog at the following link: Cardo

To emphasize the importance of postal routes on the stamp, they are indicated in gold.
