Uhudler is a unique wine from Austria, which originates in the Sudburgenland region.

In appearance it is often a rose colour, but is also made as a white wine.   A fruity wine, Uhudler impresses with its unmistakable aroma of intense flavours of strawberry and black currants/raspberries, a characteristic taste often called "foxy" in wine vocabulary.

Depending upon the variety and region, its colour ranges from pale yellow through delicate pink to brick red. The flavour is dry with a pronounced acidity.

Legend has it that the wine got its name from the wives of vintners, whose husbands, after partaken copiously of the wine, allegedly looked like eagle owls (German: Uhu).

Uhudler was banned for a time as it falsely claimed that it was injurious to the health.

In 1992, it was finally incorporated into the Austrian Wine Law. Only specified producer varieties are authorised for making Uhudler and only certified wines from particular municipalities in South Bergenland are allowed to bear the protected name.

Uhudler has the phylloxera aphid to thank for its existence after the latter almost wiped out European grape-vines at the end of the 11th Century. 

The grape varieties used are now highly resistant to phylloxera and other diseases - as such, they do not often get sprayed by pesticides. They also requite little fertilisation because of their fast growth.

Uhudler has grown into somewhat of a cult drink.

The Stamp:

The special stamp issued by Austrian Post  on 19.09.2020, shows  the historic castle in Gussing, one of the municipalities which produces the wine.
