1601) The Colossus of Rhodes, Greece: " Wonders of the Ancient World Coin Series": One Drachma Silver Coin features the Colossus of Rhodes: Year of Coin/Round issue: 2020:
The Colossus of Rhodes:
Around 280 BC, the entrance to the harbour of the Greek Island of Rhodes had a huge statue - the Colossus Of Rhodes - which kept a watchful eye on the harbour.
The statue was that of the Sun God "Helios", was 33 metres (or 108 feet) tall and was made of cast iron, making it the tallest statue in the ancient world.. This statue was listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The statue "greeted" all oncoming sailors with one arm outstretched upwards and its legs in a closed stance. The statue was constructed to celebrate the city's successful defence against Demetrius Poliorcetes, who had besieged it for a year with a large army and navy.
The statue was the signature landmark of this glorious city and had its crown shining in the sun until an earthquake toppled the colossus from its pedestal in 226 BC. It is believed that the Greeks cleared the debris soon afterwards.
