About Remote-Sensing Satellites in Israel:
Remote Sensing is a broad term for a variety of methods for collecting data from a given area of the Earth through mechanical, electronic and optic means that require no direct contact.
The aim of such sensing is to detect, identify and track certain types of targets – for the purpose of preservation activities, research, science and optimal utilization of resources (in fields such as agriculture, measuring air pollution rates and even discovering oil), as well as for military objectives.
One of the challenges of Remote Sensing from Space is to cover as large an area as possible in the least amount of time, and to collect maximum information from the measured area.
Another challenge is to match the sensor to the type of object or area that is to be monitored.
Sensing can be passive (absorption of reflected light) or active (based on the sensing equipment illuminating the measured area, such as via Synthetic Aperture Radar).
Over the years, Israel has become a leader in developing its capabilities in a wide range of remote sensing payloads and satellites.
The Israeli Space Program relies on an impressive base of technologies developed by IAI (Israel Aerospace Industries), Elop (Electro-optics, Elbit Systems), Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and more – in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense, The Israel Space Agency at the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Israeli academia.
• The OptSat 3000 Satellites are utilized by the IDF and produce very high-resolution images to fulfill Israel’s national needs.
• The TechSAR Satellite uses synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to “illuminate” the ground and can produce images both day and night as well as penetrate blocking factors such as clouds or vegetation.
• The Venus Satellite is an observation satellite that operates in several spectral wavelengths for the purposes of research, science, and environmental endeavors. It is a joint project of the Israel Space Agency and the French National
Centre for Space Studies (CNES): The satellite broadcasts images in many colors and analysis of the information it transmits contributes to accurate agriculture, monitoring shores and water sources, understanding of mankind’s global effects on the environment.
